Marx Moon Base Terrain Piece Greg Liska 2nd part

Marx Moon Base Terrain Piece Greg Liska 2nd part we look again at the moon base terrian. the time Greg paint as it had originally looked in the playset. This time Greg did a different scheme. We will let him tell you what he did

Marx Moon Base Terrain Piece Greg Liska 2nd part Greg’s Words

I was ‘strongly encouraged’ by all around me to re-paint the second Operation Moonbase terrain pieces as The Moon.  Once again – It’s Sunday night, bad lighting. I like it and I can use this for other things now, as well.  The dried, cracking look is made by spraying enamel over acrylic when it’s still tacky.

Thanks for Looking,   Greg

Greg, you’re talented enough that you could probably make the surface look like green cheese, if you wanted, and then put in some figure that would be a Moon Monster, coming around the bend of the mountain to grab one of the astronauts.

But this surface looks very realistic — dark, stark, forbidding. Could stand in for the planet Mars, as well as the Moon.

  2. Mark McNamara says:

    Looks good !

  3. Wayne W says:

I like it. The dark side of the moon. Great job!

  4. Greg Liska says:

Thanks all. I have one left and I think I’ll leave it original for now. The Mars one is not mine to keep, this Moon one is. Most of my rock formations are painted grey, so it’ll have lots of add-ons available for it. It also reminds me of a stretch of Atlantic Wall on D-Day at H-Hour +8.

  5. Erwin says:

I like the paint, some spot looks like cover in black ice over rock cracking effect.
    Very well done!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I like this one better than the Mars version Although I may hold out for the green cheese version.

    • Greg Liska says:

The original paint job has so much yellow-green in it that it could pass for cheese. Maybe cheese that some kid dropped in the dirt, because of the dark spots on it, but cheese none the less. Everyone I’ve showed the original to does not like the paint job. I’m not sure if I want to keep it original after they sort of ruined it for me by pointing out the colors in it. I was just so thrilled to have it because of all the memories attached. On the other hand, the fun of painting it is sort of calling me, too.

  7. ed borris says:

Heck I still think it would make a good D-Day beach , either Omaha Beach or Point Du Hoc. Of course, it would be better for 1/72nd than 54mm.

  8. erwin says:

I know is abut off the talk.
I manage to get not long ago two loose canon from the HO Airfix coastal defense attack playset. To my surprise the cannon that meant to represent huge cannon are perfect for actually a real position cannon in 1.32 still. The are about 3″ high by 8 long ,if look well will notice are base actually in an antitank gun. So they were in fact in scale extracted from 1.32 pretty much.
So now I’m in the hunt x more as are great x Corregidor, pacific ,or Europe or else coastal regular 105/110 mm cannon. I will do some pics soon.

  9. Brian Johnson says:

It always chafed my chaps that Airfix never up scaled their Coast Forts to 54MM.There was an article in Plastic Warrior a few years ago of some one building a copy in 54MM but I can’t remember the Volume number.

    • Erwin says:

      I agree.
It would be a big box required if ever done in 1:32.However using vacum form and plastic bunker split in section could well be done and not heavy box. What happen is the HO fury took over and was more economic to do.Look how many tanks done in HO poly series and only two WW2 plus later done by non Airfix sherman in 1:32.
Matchbox did a large playset I had seen with two bunkers and trench.Nice done, but aperantly few and only in UK distribution.
Airfix kits armor 1:32 are not bad to do.For starter w few pieces than tamiya or esci insane thousand mutiparts kits….
      Best….:-) 🙂 🙂

  10. Don Perkins says:

The moonbase piece itself looks like a nice cratered D-Day beach from heavy shelling, but unfortunately the curved surface has too much of an incline to allow either 1/32 scale figures or even HO-scale figures to stand properly, I would think.

  11. Greg Liska says:

The Marx Marine running with rifle in one hand stands better on that than on a flat surface! I’d thought about actually cutting firing slits into the mountain / cliff portion and framing it out a bit so it looks more natural and solid.

    • erwin says:

In my opinion ;I agree with both ideas/observation.
The moon base is true; looks to rounded odd shaped for a true beach, but could be used if like and adapted too; however few poses may stand well unless adapted or a pose suitable as Greg mention. And that pose is one of my proffered in the Marx marines plus the prone. Both poses remain me the sand of Iwo Jima movie with part real documentary photos used.
