The Russo-Turkish War 1877-78 was  a conflict between the Ottoman Empire and the Eastern Orthodox coalition. Eastern Orthodox was led by the Russian Empire and composed of Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro.  The war was fought in the Balkans and in the Caucasus. It started in the emerging 19th-century Balkan nationalism. Additional factors included Russian hopes of recovering territorial losses suffered during the Crimean War.  Russia also re-establishing itself in the Black Sea . In the photo above we see seven of the twelve poses.  Going from left to right you have a Russian soldier ready with bayonet rifle and officer with sword out. Next we have two different parade rest poses. I like how Engineer Bassevitch does two different poses.  The one figure is smoking a pipe which is rare to see in figure today.  Finally the three remaining poses are kneeling firing, ready and standing firing.

In this photo we see the five remaining poses. From left to right we have Russian advancing with pistol and Russian  throwing a rock. The middle figure is High ranking figure that I figure is a Character figure.  There  could other character figures in the set. Finally we have a Russian firing a pistol and  soldier firing down.

  1. Don Perkins says:

These Engineer Bassevitch figures have got to be just about the most original, best-sculpted toy soldier figures ever made. They are genuine works of art.

  2. Erwin says:

Well.Because a possible mainly russian history interest SET.
The russian soldiers are dress using mainly french style uniform of the period that could be well used as french x Mexican french war, major Dundee,Veracrux,Franco Prussian war,Crimea war, some as suaves x civil war, colonial wars,FFL, among many else w minor paint or variation or if not particularly special ,not fix at all.

    • Luiz FF Rocha says:

Hi Erwin, I have to disagree with you, the heavy boots and the ammo pouches that the soldiers wearing caps have cannot be applied to FFL, ACW or the Mexican expedition…….

  3. Erwin says:

I personally like the art scupture work. But not better that PV
However the price is better of course.
I consider other brands better than these in scupture work.
    My thoughts.

  4. Erwin says:

I personally consider then very well done but less than PV.
However otger brands are best in my opinion.
The arms attach to body in mold carving are x today value toy soldier not my favorite.
    They can do better.
    My thoughts…

  5. Darren Hatley says:

Lovely sculpted figures in Nice poses from this company, And unlike A lot of other figures coming out of Russia are reasonably priced. Speaking from a personal point of view I Hope this company comes out with some more Ancient figures like their Brilliant and Different Ancient Hebrews and Assyrians.

  6. Erwin says:

In my opinion.EB are historical set because carry many non action character poses. So to build armies off it either u need buy many sets and waste money plus poses or try get repeated single action poses.
Wile Plubius are in more all action poses so more x toy soldiers battle traget.Yet the price cost as casualties of war.

  7. ed borris says:

Very nicely sculpted with a lot of detail , the faces are great. I have no interest in that era, but they look nice.

  8. Andy says:

I’m pretty naïve about sculpting, plastic, manufacturing, etc., etc., but how come Russians seem to regularly produce such great figures while Americans are struggling? I don’t get it.

    • Erwin says:

Well Andy .I guess depent on who is the artist the brands on US are using=paying too.
I’m sure there plenty capable here to do it.
The price from those russian makers indicate high paid artist. However on Plubius many are just copies of metal figures already done and on sale x long.
OWN brand are hand scupt from chinese artist,so are EXF and others.
The cost of artist if FUGURE is carved here has to be paid at today US labor proffesional value.
To reduce price a less skillful artist could do the job x less producing a figure that even if not desirable most us will get or buy as nothing else to get and limited hobby.
AIP figures are the the less best done in US.
yet they sale because quantities, price and action poses regardless of poor detail .They beat the sales and production of many since 90s.
      My thoughts…

  9. Erwin says:

I can use some of then x afgans insurgency too.The one pose look like an (Iman )!? to me,few others x egyptian sudan war and WW1 turks never done by AIP and only by reamsa.

  10. Christian Aldo says:

    Nice figures, original subject.

  11. erwin says:

TECHNOLOG has 6 sets- historical are direct related to this war, Scale on last TECHNOLOF go to 54/56 mm easy and more action poses .Just in case any need extra armies bodies ,that brand is cheap and easy to get those sets least.

  12. Very cool. I would love to get my hands on a few sets. I just finished a book related to the Valentine Baker’s last stand at the Battle of Tashkessen:

  13. If I was to do the Russo Turkish War on mass I’d convert the bulk from ACW figures from Call to Arms, Accurate, Timpo Action Pack, Marx and AIP of which I have ample and I’d buy the Bassevitch figures to add variation. The conversion work required is not that great, mainly adding havelocks from tissue soaked in PVA or using putty, a putty ammo pouch and carved boots or use bottom halves of cavalry. The Turks are easily converted from Zouaves or cowboys (the latter especially good for cavalry; the vests are painted as short jackets and the Turks used Winchester rifles. The hat brims are removed to make fezes. The cavalry (especially irregular) can also be made from Italeri mamelukes. Also AIP Egyptias can be used as they fought for the Turks.

  14. Could I please have contact details, for I would like some of these figures to match against British forces in an imaginary but possible intervention in Turkey’s favour in 1877-1878.
