Andy Keliar Conversions July 2016, we have another one of our readers who like to do conversions. I like conversions as it gives you different poses for your scenes.
Andy Keliar Conversions July 2016 The Conversions
The first one we have from Andy is a union civil war soldier sneaking up on Confederate soldier.
The union figure is a complete conversion and is a nice pose. It captures part of the war where soldiers snuck into the opposition. These operations was to gather information and harass the enemy.
The most popular knife used in the civil war was the Bowie knife. The knife was named for James Bowie. Many soldier found it was too heavy and a hindrance. According to one source use of knives was avoided in close combat. Still it is a great pose.
The other conversion that Andy did was a traveling medicine show. The traveling medicine show would have a suppose doctor offering a miracle cure. He would be assisted by a musical player plus other acts. Some had Indians preforming various dances. These were popular in the old west. I saw a few in the early 50’s at our local fair.
Timpo is the only company that did a medicine show wagon. It was later made in China. The Timpo medicine wagon was Doctor Thaddeus Tripp’s Medicine Wagon. The wagon came with two figures a driver and Doctor Thaddeus Tripp. The good doctor had a bottle in each hand. Also with the set was a box of bottles. The Thaddeus figure was also sold separate with two pistols instead of bottles. The China copy has only the wagon and driver.
From the scene above Andy has made five different figures. I do not recognize the original figures he used. It is a nice scene. He has the China copy of the Timpo medicine wagon in the background.
Andy Keliar Conversions July 2016 Update
As mention in the comment from Kent Sprecher. Processed Plastic did a sutler wagon. While not medicine show it was square top wagon. There are two version Sierra Jack and Kroger Groceries. the latter was done for the Kroger Grocery chain and is hard to find.
Out of all great idea and very good conversion jobs. The medicine saler set is more original well made and awesome idea!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
In my like..
I think that the Man/Woman set is a Replicants figure. So is the Gent in the Top Hat and the Brown guy with his back to us.
The pink Cowgirl is either Penny from Sky King or a recast Marx cowgirl. I cant tell from the photo.
Connected white man/woman came from Larry Patterson years ago. Top hat guy is from a Preiser Elastolin kit. Brown guy is Conte resin Alamo Travis. Red cowgirl is Penny. Signs are from computer & mounted on cardboard. Big one is tied with thread (rope) to Marx dead trees. Wagon is Hong Kong Wild West Timpo copy via way of Argentina. Guy leaning on pick is recast Arctic Explorer. Indian is Rubenstein. His horse is from an MB kit made in Russia. Yellow platform is Marx circus. Tall cowboy is Valiant Miniatures resin kit. Blue fiddler is Replicants. Guitar & accordion players on bottom are Larry Patterson P&P. Guitar player on top is Marx conversion. Guitar is Marx sprue accessory. Doctor with bottles is a P&P conversion. White horse on left is Dom with Marx harness. I think that covers it all. Got idea from Revell model kit. The “show” keeps evolving as I get new ideas for add ons. It now has some Timmee chickens, etc.
In 1982 Processed Plastic (Tim-Mee) made a larger scale wagon SIERRA JACKS for their 3 inch western figure line. Mining and Household items with MEDICINE listed for sale. Too big for our 54 & 60mm figures but a nice piece. It was first made in red as a KROGER delivery wagon in 1980. Kroger is a major midwest grocery chain who sold toys at Christmas including the Processed plastic train and wagons + the REMCO missile bases.
I have place the photo in the post.
There also exists a Jecsan “Jecsaramas Del Oeste” “Doc – Dentist Elixer” Medicine Wagon. I have it and a Jail Wagon from the series. They are probably 30% larger than the Hong Kong Timpo copy Medicine Wagon, but work with 54mm & 60mm figures. The wagons came in a generic window box that also pictures a covered wagon. Don’t know what else came in the wagon series. Nice, sturdy wagons with two hitched horses and 2 painted figures each.
Never saw it that is why I did not mention it. Jescan items are very good and I love to collect when I find it.
I’ll text Erwin pictures & ask him to pl;ease forward to you.
Pics sent to Erwin of Jecsan Medicine & Jail Wagons & boxes which he has agreed to convert & pass on. Thanks, Erwin – VERY kind man!!
Reamsa did one as well.Jecsan early verssion were done in wood by (Artesanias Roldan).Later in plastic.
Same w western building.
Another rare western wagon.was the Water big tank on carriage.
Yw.
Done
Jecsan plastic carriages are 10 different.Included one stegacoatch, the water wagon, one jail, one army ,two different covered wagons, one open top,one two wheels and detachable roof w woman driver, one caisson w cannon.
Scale are same as Comansi to match the 65/70 mm figures. However horses run smaller given more impression as to be used x 54/60 mm.
Detail is more neat than Comansi that did only 4 differet carriages.
But Comansi horses and harness are nicer ..
The poses made by Andy are the best and accurate for medicine wagon show.
Few done by older companies had only drivers and or few real poses x it.
Well done!!! 🙂 🙂
Love the medicine show idea. Reminds me of the Josey Wales scene. “Well…what can you expect from a non-believer?”
Thanks, guys!! Had fun putting it together.
I got the idea from a model kit:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/UPC-Vintage-Universal-Powermaster-Corp-Model-Medicine-Wagon-1-400-Scale-/232025575062?hash=item3605cd4e96:g:X9gAAOSwwo1XfUhE
Didn’t buy kit (which pops up regularly) because it’s “1/400 scale” – I guess they meant 1/40 scale – which is too small for my preferences, so I made my own!!
