Marx Warriors of the World Pirates Window Box is one example of the ways that Marx sold the figures. Marx did the figures in individual boxes, small window boxes like one we see here and two tier boxes.
The window box came with three figures and two plastic flats. The plastic flats were unique to the window boxes.
In the pirate box the two plastic flats are palm tree and shovel. The three pirates are pirate with sword amd crutch, pirate with club and knife and Pirate with sword. The figures were originally done in United States unpainted soft plastic.
This photo and the next show the different versions of the pirates. The pirate on the left is the original United States version. The pirate on the right is a German version with Hong Kong version in the middle.
The boxes has three Warriors of the World cards on the back. The cards were a fun part of the figures. It gave the figure a name and a history. Many of the histories on the card we have not been able to find any evidence that it was a real person. Still the cards are interesting.
Marx Warriors of the World Pirates Window Box Look at the box
I had a bunch of those pieces that came in the window boxes. I remember lions and chariots from the Roman set. Long gone, now.
Interesting in the last photo under the pirates it say’s “The Pittsburgh Pirates”. That’s rather odd.
Oh no! The biographies on the cards might have been fictitious? There goes another cherished childhood memory.
Yes.I has google the title (the Pittsburgh pirates) and other that the team nothing appear. Why also said as seen in TV?
Could some body explain about both please!!!??
Thanks 🙂 :-)!
Nice, I don’t believe I have seen the chest, palm tree and shovel flats before . The shovel and especially the chest seem to have more colored detail was the chest and shovel painted directly on plastic or had a picture of a chest and shovel with dirt been glued to plastic ?
The shovel and treasure chest are full solid one plastic part ,painted over. Not picture glue over.
Thanks Erwin !
They used to have commercials for them on TV, back in the 60’s. At least in Chicago. The Pittsburg Pirates is a baseball team. I don’t know why that is on the box. They used to advertise toys on Romper Room a very old kids TV show. I remember seeing the Gibbs Custer set on a Romper Room commercial, they said it was sold at Walgreens. There was no Walgreens in my neighborhood, most drug stores back then in Chicago were privately owned. The only Walgreens I knew of as a kid was one in Skokie. I also remember Warriors of the World commercials on TV , but I don’t remember the TV show where the commercials appeared. Chicago in the 50’s and 60’s was a much different place then it is today. Many grocery stores, drug stores and bakeries privately owned. Plus there were many variety stores where you could buy toys, groceries , penny candy and comic books. Lots of barber shops too. Now they are mostly gone.
The warriors of the world commercial has a song. I can not sing but a friend can.
Could they have been used as a giveaway at a Pirates baseball game ?
WOW were the first toy soldiers I could buy with my own money & make my own choices about what I bought.
Vikings & Romans. I was in heaven.
WOW’s were great, some of my happiest childhood memories. However, they made poor toys for toy soldier battles as they were quite fragile with a few exceptions. I spent a lot of time gluing them back together with varying degrees of success. I never saw the Brits, French or Germans in our local stores.
“The Pittsburgh” tape on the box looks more like a previous owner who was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates taped it on the box himself.
Brian is not.
The box in pictures is mine.
The title is repeated in two more spot in the box.
I had list the case in ebay x sale also
Sorry!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
