16th Annual New Jersey Toy Soldier Military show and Sale

We have gotten in a report from our very good friend John Reichl, who attended the 16th Annual New Jersey Toy Soldier Military show and Sale this Sunday. John said that the show had been moved from its regular spot to the main ballroom due the old spot having been flooded. John reported the new location was nicer due to the high ceiling and better lighting. I agreed as Laurie and I have attend several shows in their main ball room. Business was brisk and there was a good crowd at the show. The hit of the show was Gerry Watts’ $.50 figure table. According to John, this table was 4 and 5 collectors deep at times. Gerry also had a selection of war gaming items that was also selling briskly.  Other plastic people at the show was Bob Jones and bob DeAngelo. The metal dealers were having good sales. Hopefully these good sales will continue through to other shows.

Yeah especially Indy. It’s getting close.

Well, Indy is just two weeks away, and I’m like a child waiting for Christmas Eve: Will it ever actually get here? And while thinking of Indy last week (while perusing my latest issue of Playset Magazine), I started mentally compiling a list of the Marx playsets I received while growing up vs. the ones I didn’t get. The ones I got were:

    Marx Knight’s Castle
    Marx 60mm Robin Hood
    Roy Rogers
    Lone Ranger
    54mm Fort Apache
    60mm Rin Tin Tin
    Arctic Explorer
Davey Crockett at Alamo (first set which had Indians)
Davey Crockett at Alamo (second set which had Mexicans)
    Zorro
    Cpt. Gallant Foreign Legion
    Civil War

The big ones I didn’t get, which truly made me feel deprived, were any of the WWII playsets, and the Johnny Tremain Revolutionary War set, or the Gunsmoke set, or Wyatt Earp, or Wagon Train, or Cape Canaveral.

I think a lot of the excitement I feel at toy soldier shows results from the sets I missed, and which I now have spent a good deal of time and money trying to make up for.

And I just remembered: I also didn’t get Ben Hur, Rifleman, Jungle Jim, West Point, or The Untouchables, either. I did however get a Farm Set one Christmas.

  4. Ed Borris says:

    I got:

    Rin Tin Tin
    Fort Apache Stockade
    Moon Base
    Prince Valiant Castle
Davey Crocketts the Alamo with 45mm defenders and 45mm Fess Parker figure

I wanted Cape Canerval, instead I got the Reading Set, actually the only one I was disappointed in getting instead
I wanted the Artic Explorers, I got The Ideal Mounties Set, actually not a bad trade off.
I wanted Battleground , I got some Lido set instead
I wanted the Blue and the Gray Set, instead I got the MPC Blue and Grays, ugh.
I also wanted the Gibbs Custer set, never got it. Now I have 3, I had 9, I sold 6

One Gibbs will make the trip to Indy.

And now as an adult you may be doing what I sometimes feel I’m doing — acquiring now what I couldn’t get then, and trying to make up for as an adult what I didn’t get as a child. Actually, Ed, I think I may have met you at OTSN during room trading. I distinctly remember being in a room where the person/dealer had 3 of the Gibbs Custer Last Stand cylinrical containers. Could that have been you? If I remember the price for each was $200.00, which I seriously considered, and continued to think about as I was driving back to Michigan.

  6. Ed Borris says:

I think you are correct, except I used to love the Civil War guys, now I have no interest at all.

Yes, that had to be me, I am the king of Gibbs, or I was until I sold a host of them to Craig Remington. I used to be the king of the 60mm cavalry guys until I sold a ton to some guy from Oklahoma. Now I think I’m only King of the 60mm revised pose pioneers. Well I still have one Gibbs for sale, could be your big chance.
