Marx Sawhorse or Sawbuck Hardest Western Accessory

rsz_040The Marx Sawhorse or sawbuck is the hardest Marx western piece .  I found it in a partial Marx Fort Apache playset recently.  The playset had 60mm pioneers and Indians. It was in a plain cardboard box so I do not have the possible number of the playset.  Seeing the Marx sawhorse brought back a memory going back to the Columbus Toy show many years ago. I was walking along with Rick Koch at the show when we came upon a dealer who we purchase a number of items including several Marx sawhorses. Rich told me that he knew of a collector who had been looking for one for at least one year before he found one. This was before the internet so the person had to write a lot of letters and make phone calls. It was the old story of if you were looking for something it became a quest almost a quest like  looking for the holy grail. While other people  find it without much effort.

Curiosity got me as I had not remember seeing Marx sawhorse in recent finds so I check Kent Sprecher’s web site. I looked under his Marx western accessory section but I did not see it.  I looked on Ebay and did not see anyone offering it for sale. This makes me wonder  when was the Marx Sawhorse offered, for how long and why was it pulled from the playsets? Also related to it is what mold was it in originally.

I will be putting it up on Ebay for sale.  I will be doing an auction and will start it off at $9.99. I will be curious if it sells or not. We will keep you posted.

Do you have any grail quest stories for a plastic figure or accessory let us know. My grail quest was the Speedwell Armor Car on fire. It took me 40 years to find one and now I own two.  So let’s hear your tale of searching.

<H2>UPDATE<H2>

We are getting information in on the Marx saw horse it is actually called a sawbuck. (Look I did lousy in industrial arts so I do not know terms for these items.) Eric John in his Marx Web site has an article on the sawbuck. In the article he states it might have been bought from an outside source.  At the time he wrote the article he noted that it had been seen in one playset a Marx Western Ranch. I found it amongst Fort Apache pieces. More mysteries to figure out.

Thanks for posting a good photo of the sawhorse. I think you will easily get the price you are asking and should ask for twice that.

I got two reissues ,were done a bit darker rust color, still in sale around!!
Interesting to know the background history.

  3. I am not sure if what we call sawbuck reissues are reissues, but rather just old stock found in a warehouse. I was never able to find a mold number and tend to believe that Marx bought them from an outside source.

Well apparently the call reissues are very new like and more gloss rust/brown or terracotta color wile vintage are grey and mid/dark mate brown as far I had seen them.
Here is link of a seller just now on eBay that sale them. He offer it in rust brown.
I had seen them in silver (not grey color), very alike resent recast Marx sold out there.
The two in exact colors as these reissued offered .Mine were pack together in clear bag along sealed and looks very new, not like old 90’s reissues Marx items around still. I got them in mid 2007 or 2008 I guess.

  5. Most reissue have a source, but nobody seems to know where these “reissues” are coming from so I still think they may be old warehouse stock. Glossy plastic was used in the early 50s as well as flat colors.

Yes this is getting interesting. If Marx did get it from an outside source the question is why? I got the recent one from Partial Fort Apache with 60mm pioneers and Indians.

  6. erwin says:

Well not is proved they are original back stock either. So in my opinion these being sold as reissues I will take as reissues because differ from all original I had see so far, unless some could confirm with veracity are old stock from the 50’s and how they pup up so much after so long in such quantities by various seller.
The one posted by admi is definitely an old vintage one. Interesting to know the background in how these appear and despair so quick from the playset and what playset carry them.

TSSD used to sell this item on it’s “Loose Figures” section for $1.00 per piece. They labeled it as a “reissue”. I purchased 5 of them, basically just as part of a larger order of other things. This would have been 2 – 4 years ago. It isn’t listed on TSSD’s website any longer. I’m happy to now hear that in fact these pieces may be original Marx, or at least something that Marx subcontracted out.

I thought it fit in perfectly with the rest of the Marx Fort Apache/Alamo/Western set accessories.
