Our very good friend Paul Morehead sent us this ad from the Valiant comics 1973. It is an advertisement for the Marx 12 inch Lone Ranger Figure line. Some of you are saying Marx never did twelve inch Lone Ranger figures Gabriel did. You would be right, but some reason Marx picked up the line to sell in the UK possible the success of it in the states. Marx did figures and accessories that were not available in the United States. Paul Morehead is wandering if the ad was done in the U.S. or in the UK.

I had a memorable experience with the Lone Ranger when I was a kid. My parents took me and my sister to the Allegheny County Fair in the very late 50’s. We were standing on the outside rail of a dirt oval race track. They dimmed the lights, and over the loud speaker came the recorded message from the TV show. “Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear” ending with a “Hearty HI YO Silver!” The lights came back on and there was Clayton Moore on Silver and Jay Silverheels on Scout. The William Tell Overture blared out of the loud speakers and They reared up on their horses and galloped down the race track firing pistols in the air. There is nothing more “thrilling” than seeing your TV heroes LIVE. Oh and Lassie was there too.
I have the Marx 60mm standing and mounted Lone Ranger figures, but no Tonto. I use the Stuart generic mounted figure as Tonto because it looks a whole lot like Jay Silverheels. The beautiful Stuart rearing horse along with Marx saddles really animates the two mounted figures.
Sent to you from “yesteryear”.

Larry: That would be VERY cool. I loved the Lone Ranger TV show. I did meet two of my heroes, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris at the first game (exhibition) in the Astrodome, and I was thrilled! I wonder if they remembered meeting me? My guess is NO! Go figure.
I never, as a kid, got to meet Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, or Tonto, or Trigger, Silver, or Scout —- or Micky Mantel or Roger Maris — but felt fortunate at the Arkansas State Fair to get to meet Zorro and his black horse, sometime around 1958.
I got to meet Sean O’Grady once, the one time lightweight boxing champion. I called out to him as he was walking by at a fight and just told him I always enjoyed his fights and said I just wanted to shake his hand. He shook my hand and said he’d come back after he finished his interview. I heard that before and thought yeah sure. Fifteen minutes later the main event ended and there was a break in the action so I stood up stretched and looked around, when i turned back to face the ring there was Sean O’Grady standing in front of me with his hand out, he even stayed around for about 15 minutes and talked boxing. Cool dude. Much better than my experience with Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews my childhood hero’s. They turned out to be major jerks and that was the end of my hero worship days.

As a child I saw Hopalong Cassidy at a Halloween parade, Pancho, Tonto and George Reeves (Superman)at Hess’s Department Store and Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Pat Brady at our local fair. As an adult I have met many stars at various celebrity shows. The two I want to single out are western stars Larry Storch and Will Hutchinson (Sugarfoot). With Larry, Laurie and I had a wonder experience because of Bob Burns who worked with Larry and Forrest tucker on Filmations Ghost Busters. Bob played Tracy the Gorilla. Laurie and I met Bob at horror Show in NJ. At the convention some idiot when Bob was talking about Ghost busters some idiot said you played Larry Storch. Several years later we met Larry and his lovely wife at a collectible show in Cherry Hill NJ. I told him about the story and then paid and had him autographed it with a message I am a real Larry Storch. We sent it to bob who got a kick out of it.
With Will Hutchinson we met him and his wife at Collectibles Show and had a good time. I have written to him several times and was surprised to receive a nice letter back.
Well, the only other famous person I met was Ron Santo hall of fame third baseman for the Cubs when they opened up the Jewel by my house in 1962. He was a nice guy too. A semi famous person I met was Paul Justin former NFL quarterback with numerous teams, his sister was my bartender. Rode the elevator at OTSN with Ruben Blades the actor.
I met a couple of Presidents while working protection details (Reagan, Clinton and Bush 41). Reagan was very nice and stopped to thanks us and shook hands all around.
The other two were polite and waved.
But, I’ll tell you this, and I am NOT a religious person at all.
I had the honor of escorting John Cardinal O’Connor to a wake near St. Pats.
You can believe or not beleive, but the goodnes that emenated from that man was just overpowering. I’ve never felt anything so powerful in my life. Before or after.
Take it for what you will.
