Paintings That May Have Inspired Toy Soldiers

Our very good friend Mark McNamara has sent us three examples of painting that may have used to make Andy Gard and Marx figures. Here is what Mark said.

Here are some photos of 19th century Civil War art by Paul Philippoteaux (Gettysburg Cyclorama ) and a painting by William Trego ( Into the fight ) and ( Rescue of the colors ) Which look like they might have inspired the Andy Gard advancing, being shot, possibly clubbing and the Marx falling horse and rider, maybe someone else has seen photos they think might have inspired other figures

There’s a few more that look ‘familiar’ in there, too. For example, the kneeling, firing pistol next to the center red arrow looks pretty WoW, to me.

Right Greg, I think the more you look the more we might find, there is a couple other “clubbing ” guys in the painting which might possibly be some sort of composite Andy Gard figure ? If you click on the photo it should enlarge, I also sent another photo of a painting by William Trego called ” Saving the colors ” ( it did not show up in this posting by Paul, but I’m hoping he could get it posted, you can also Google it if anybody wanted to ) in which there is a figure which seems to be an obvious inspiration for the Andy Gard soldier being shot and is dropping his musket .

The entire artwork for the Giant B&G carton is taken from the Time Magazine Civil War inserts, commerating the Centennial of the War.

That’s the biggest one I can think of.

  3. Mark says:

Yep, I Googled it to compare the cover, it matches ( if it’s the same one you are talking about) is titled By the editors of life, Great Battles of the Civil War 1961, thanks for the info Bill !

  4. I have a VHS tape of early Alamo movies and in one a mounted Mexican lancer wearing a Presideo (round) hat appears. He looks just like the Marx pose.

  5. Bill Nevins says:

Yes, it was Life magazine, not Time. I have the full set of 6 inserts. All of the pictures and copy are printed and attached to very heavy stock card. It was meant to last.
Anyway, it’s also the side panels that have the artwork, not just the top cover.
Picked up the whole set at a yard sale years ago.

What you show on that link, is a reprint of the original 6 part series rolled into one volume, by the way.

If I’m not mistaken, there was an,article in PFPC about this showing all the pix.

Does sound familiar Bill, I would like to check out the first version and Centennial Marx Civil War figures to see if they match any artwork, I think I did a little years ago but I don’t rember which if any I found matches ?
