Fruitcake

For some people say the word  fruitcake and people will get a negative feeling. Laurie is one of those people. She hates fruitcake because her mother would make them and put things in she did not like and then she was force to eatthe fruitcake to keep peace.

I on the other hand love fruicake. For me it brings back pleasant memories of taking my parents to an auction over in New Jersey. The auction sold closeouts at great prices.  I remembered once they got a load of gold foiledchoclate mints which party did not get his boxes in time for the holiday. The auction put the gold foil chocolate mints into shoeboxes and sold a half ton in one weekend.  Each Christmas holiday the auction would sell fruit cakes which we would buy one. We would eat it plain and not fill it with liqour.

Last year Laurie got me as a surprise a small fruitcake at the local grocery store. I enjoyed and was able to find one for this year as well as Laurie found me another one like she got last year. So I can recapture one of those forgotten pleasures of holiday pass.

Hmmm, I’m 60 years old and have never ever ever eaten a piece of fruitcake. Not sure if I would like it or not , next time I see a spread with fruitcake, I’m going to try a piece.

The best way to try it is a sample on buffet or party. I got to like humous when eating out with a friend many years ago. Laurie likes that I enjoy non traditional foods.

American fruitcake is something many make jokes about.
It is a dense, dryish, small loaf with jellied “fruits” in the matrix. I never cared for it.

When living in Germany, my landlady promised I could have some of the “fruitcake” she was making for Christmas. My unenthusiastic politeness reminded her to inform me that German “fruitcake” is not the same as the American “shrunken head” version (not her words, but mine).
So I tried it when the time came. It was very good; moist, and more like a large Danish with raisins and nuts.
Anyway you look at it, the Germans do Christmas right.

    Froehe Weinachten!

      Hi Don
Each country has their own way of making fruitcake. The fruitcake I have had has been moist. I do not like fruitcake with liqour added.
