Why Atlantic Medieval Cannon?

106

This will be an ongoing series that I will call Why.  Over the years  I have acquire figures and accessories that I said to myself why did the company make it? Case in point the Atlantic medieval cannon.  I first acquire a group of these cannons when I bought bags of Atlantic Figures from our very good friend Peter Bergner many years ago . The bags had a mish mash of figures put in the bags.  For example a bag might have some Germans, modern Italian air force and Japanese. My staff at the time and I had to separate the bags and put figures into correct groups.  In the some bags were these large cannons. The cannon snapped together  and has a firing mechanism to thrower plastic cannon.  I looked at the cannons at felt they were designed to go with medieval figures. Problem was Atlantic never made medieval or even knight  figures. Was it a line that was planned and never made? Who knows.

The cannons were marketed as civil war cannons. I can imagine the surprise when the person opened the box.  The one bright spot they could use the cannon  to shoot at their figures.

One of these days I would love to read a history on this company. They made interesting figures such ancients and western. Then they did pieces like the cannon above.

Yes ,the cannon is great for my XVI-XVIII century European wars and for Turks too.
They did a nice wagon and Gatling gun. The cannon/caisson box has this odd cannon two.
But in reality was done first as a set of two cannon (one for each kid to play target games and come with a target paper/ square set two plus two different colors shells(red and yellow sets).Cannon were original done in Brown in target sets
Same way they did the much nicer WW2 German 88 mm .No figures included.
Later was added to and as civil war cannon .in bronze ,grey and green colors.
Both target sets could be seen in Atlantic color catalog of 1970.
    I got bot sets ..

It used to be reported that the Atlantic molds were in Iraq. Has anyone heard any updated news regarding them since the liberation of Iraq?

The unconfirmed reports I have gotten were the molds were destroyed either by being left out or bomb raids in the second Gulf War.. Greg Liska served over there and he was not able to find anything. It was shame only a few of 1/72 scale molds exist.

Kudos to Joe Saine for a great auction on Saturday and a nice show following it up on Sunday in Livonia, Michigan. Some great prices and real values were discovered by many happy and winning bidders at the auction.
