One of the items I picked up for myself at East Coast Show was BMC’s Battle of Appomattox. These are the first new figures that BMC has done in awhile. The bag come with two character figures General Lee and General Grant and 16 figures in four poses.
The Grant and Lee are very nice figures are equal to the Marx character figures of Grant and Lee. The BMC Character figures are more animated than the Marx figures. Grant is holding a paper while Lee is with hat off and holding it in his left hand. The four soldier figures are a little disapointing they are more stylized than realistic. The soldier with sword has a ring left hand so he can hold the spearate flags that come with the set. These figures are much better than BMC’s previous Civil War Figures.
The set is worthy to be picked up for the collection.
What are the flags like? Are they the same stick on ones they had in the other Civil War Set?Can you show a picture?Thanx,B.
Hi Brian
The flags are all plastic and have the flag design molded into the flag. I will get a picture along with the AIP Camel Corp this week after I do photos at my junior high school reunion. That’s right junior high scholl, someone has a face book page for my junior from the 60’s and I talk mysel in going to it. I will tell everyone about it.
For all the ACW history fans out there, I’ll go ahead and ask; was the set called the “Battle of Appomattox” rather than “Battle of Appomattox Court House”?
An insignificant difference except in educational circles.
For those not of VA, the town in middle south VA is named “Appomattox Court House”. This name does not refer to a building. Perhaps they’ve shortened it officially by now, but at the time, that was the deal.
A thanks to Plastic Warrior for putting in a little note about HTF’s Robin Hood’s Fighting Peasants. People are reading it and sending me comments.
Don, you really need to start taking credit cards when people want to order your product. I think you will find, as did Barzsos, TSSD, Armies In Plastic, and Delson’s Toy Soldier Company, that the convenience and ease of ordering experienced by your customers when they can charge on a credit card will increase your sales exponentially. When I order something, I want to pick up the phone, speak to a person, and place my order with my credit card. I do not wish to write out a letter, a check, prepare an envelope, and then mail it off by snail-mail. That was OK 50 years ago; now it’s hopelessly out of date. Ron Barzos told me years ago that his mail orders really increased when he started accepting credit cards. It is not hard to get started; just go to your local bank and they will get the machine all set up for you right in your own home. As an attorney, I receive quite a few thousand dollars a year in business from people who could not pay any other way than by credit card. I only offer this advice because you have expressed dissappointment that your new figures have not been more enthusiastically received. I think your cumbersome, outdated ordering procedures may be part of the problem. Please accept these thoughts in the spirit in which they are intended.
Paypal is another simple option and all he needs is an e-mail address and a bank account.
Thanks, Don Perkins, for the advice. Definitely something to consider.
But to Andy Keliar (and thank you also for the suggestion) Jeannie and I were blatantly ripped off by Paypal once; allowing an obvious scam pulled by a 3rd party. I don’t intend to give them a second chance. The HTF website has a link to the Anti-Paypal website.
I also don’t appreciate Ebay forcing users to have a Paypal account in order to list stuff for auction, but that is what happens when a CORPORATION gets too big; starts pushing people around.
On a brighter note, Happy Thanksgiving to all the readers out there!
Bring on the Turkey!
OUCH!!!!! Sorry to hear that one, Don………. Sure not a good thing to learn.
Regret to have reminded you of a negative experience. Have to agree with eBay getting a little “too big for their britches”, but I do like the convenience of Paypal and, fortunately, have had no problems with them yet.
Happy Thanskgiving to all!!!
As a sculptor, I’ve never liked BMC figures. The Grant and Lee figures are o.k. the other figures are atrocious.
Re: Paypal. I agree that PayPal sucks big time. However I think that Don Ducote should try it again.
Don, your sales will definately increase, and it will allow you to sell on ebay. It’s just the way of the world; people will pay you in the fashion that’s easiest for them.
Don, the main problem you face is that most people think “HTF” means “hard to find”. A lot of people don’t know that your wonderful figures exhist.

BMC has never been noted for their excellence in sculpting. If I was 12 years old again, I would probably think BMC was great because they provide foreign figures that weren’t readily available for WWII when I was a kid. Outside of the Iwo Jima Marines which are copies of King and Country figures, I think the best figure they ever did was the dead bugler from the Custer set, of course you have to leave out the cheesy looking arrows. The dead German from D-day wasn’t bad nor was the German firing the MG-42, and the Mexican firing up from the Alamo, other than that, not a great lot. Then again I think we have to give them a pass because I beleive their marketing target was kids not us middle aged collectors.
But as kids we recognized junk. Who didn’t think that Marx was way cooler than MPC and Timmee?
True, but that didn’t prevent me from having the Timmee’s, MPC’s and Lido’s be part of the battle, they just got killed first. I was just saying that foreign troops would have been welcome to the battles, my first foreign WWII figures were the Lido Germans and Japanese and they weren’t that bad really, below Marx for sure, but acceptable.
