SUNDAYS FINDS 003

In a box of junk I found Seth Adams and Flint, in perfect shape along with Britians swop knights and ACW, mint 60 mm Roy Rogers, a brown yoke from the oxen wagon. A ton of Peco’s (20+)and lots more. 6 or 7 Ajax or Palmer spacemen with helmets.

A second dealer had PECO pirates and Crockett complete with the cards. I got Morgan, Blackbeard, Crocket and 1 more all with complete weapons.

Man, you must have a horseshoe embedded in you somewhere. I need a knife for my Davey Crockett and then he is complete and you find them on cards no less. Man.

Bill Nevins must be “living right”, and the rest of us apparently aren’t! These kinds of finds are unbelievable —- the kind you would occasionally read about in Tom Terry’s PFPC, which would usually end with the admonition that “this stuff is still out there, folks, if you will just get out and look.”

  3. ed borris says:

Or, maybe we are just living wrong. In my case I’m quite sure that’s it.

      Ed
You are not living wrong, Bill’s area could be better for old material. I have one flea market I do where I get mostly new stuff. Another market gets old stuff but I have heavy competition. You never know what will turn up.

  4. ed borris says:

Yeah you’re probably right, he Chicago area should be loaded with old stuff, the problem may just be too much competition. I have made a number of good finds over the years, just not that good. My best find was probably the two Guerrilla Warfare sets with unopened bagged figures and accessories.

  5. Bill Nevins says:

I’m sure that a lot is due to my location on Long Island. The Island was a boom town during the 60’s, due to the aerospace industry thriving here. Lots of middle class families grew up here and people had the money to spend on toys.
I also find a lot of foreign plastic for the same reason. Plenty of immigrants came to Long Island to work in the space industry and brought toys with them. Or brought some back after visiting their home country.

I highly doubt that I “live right.”

I work at this. I get up at 4:30 in the morning to catch the vendors unpacking. I give out business cards to everyone. I also make it a point to cultivate relationships with vendors who turn up stuff for me. Now they save toy soldiers for me. I don’t have to worry about someone else beating me to it. You have to approach it like a job.
I’m sure Paul and others do the same.

  6. ed borris says:

I still have a regular job that keeps me pretty busy.

  7. Bill Nevins says:

Ed. Yup.being retired is an advantage. But the market is on Sunday when most people are off

  8. Bill Nevins says:

Ed, Yup, being retired is an advantage. But the market is on Sunday, when most people are off. Most markets are on the weekends, at least here.
I still did the same thing when I was gainfully employed.

  9. Bill Nevins says:

Sorry, don’t know how I managed to do that???

  10. ed borris says:

By Sunday I’m too beat to go traveling around looking for toys. Most of the time anyway. Still do some Sunday shows. I wake up daily at 3:45Am drive 40+ miles to downtown Chicago and drive home again at 2:00PM. After 5 days of that, I’m pretty beat.

    SWEET !!!

  12. Daniel St. John says:

Oh, man– they look wonderful, Bill.
    How do I contact you.??
Talk about wonderful luck.!! … and Striking Gold!!! Yikes!!

  13. Daniel St. John says:

… and working at it.!! Sounds like you “work” the turf, Bill.
I contact people who deal in toys in the State but they don’t seem to have very many shows here in Minnesota. I check a number of places that carry vintage toys… but they don’t seem to have things I’m in search of.

  14. Mark says:

    Daniel,
there is a magazine called Playset Magazine ( published by Kathy and Rusty Kearn ) the last issue May/June 2015 has a great story on Pecos figures with a lot of great photos ,I highly recomend it, you can Google wwwplaysetmagazine.com

    Mark

    • Daniel St. John says:

      Yes, Mark–
Thanks for the heads up on the PLAYSET MAGAZINE.
That’s a wonderful issue for us Peco fans. John Benneth is part of the interview and I’ve made contact with a writer of one of the articles, John Penzer,– who is a wonderful fan of Peco, too.

  15. ed borris says:

I just won an auction with 5 Peco’s pirates in it, there are some accessories, not sure how much at least two swords and a belt for sure ,they were mixed in a large lot with MPC pirates. For $30.00 it’s worth a shot.

  16. Erwin says:

Yes. some times is better look x miselanius lots under generic names such as pirates .or else and you will find better deal prices.
    I always do that way.
As the moment any list an item with specific name and brand .many collectors will go x a bid and price will go high.
I skip those listing most time as non like to waste time.
Another option if looking non US brand is just type (country mame first ) followed by either figurines.toy soldiers or just vintage toy.
Last some people list toy soldier as ( cake toper figures or Else)
Specially if made of hard plastic.
I got a lot of Marx warriors like that for ridiculous prices

  17. Mark says:

    Nice job ED !

  18. Bill Nevins says:

Good for you, Ed. See, it’s still out there.

  19. ed borris says:

    Bill,

Yeah it’s still out there, just getting tougher to find.

  20. Daniel St. John says:

    Ed,
    which pirates did you get…???
    And which accessories??

I was just able to get a blue Blackbeard… but no accessories. That was $29.95 and shipping.
Sounds like your $30.00 bid was a much better deal.!!
Plus, — Blackbeard is a bit “discolored” and looks like he’s been around the Cape of Good Hope while being keelhauled the whole time.

  21. Daniel St. John says:

Hey, one of my lots is up on e-bay… but I don’t think anyone is interested in super-hero figures.
the LOT 6 VTG 1989 TOY BIZ DC COMICS SUPER HEROES FIGURES SUPERMAN WONDER WOMAN +MOC, has been listed on eBay! Please click the following link to watch the bidding action . You will receive a summary email of the auction, once it has ended.

  22. ed borris says:

    Dan,

I two Long John Silvers, One Captain Kidd he has a sword and the shoulder harness belt contraption. I have one Sword for Long John too. I also got two of Morgans no accessories. One Morgan has no base and someone colored him with a Sharpie, one of the Long John’s was also colored with a Sharpie. Captain Kidd is the best one I’d ask $30.oo plus shipping, $65.00 for the whole lot. Five figures total, 3 accessories.

  23. ed borris says:

    Okay thanks.

  24. Daniel St. John says:

Man, do I appreciate you guys.!!
It’s a little hard to express my feelings for all the help you’ve all given me in my search for these guys.
I truly appreciate the help and support.
They will probably have to put these peco guys in my casket when I leave.
    (I think I’m kidding here.)lol.!!

  25. eborris says:

Two years ago I had all the pirates except Morgan with most of the accessories, they all had weapons and hats. I sold them to a buddy cheap and he traded them, I tried to buy them back but they were gone.

  26. Daniel St. John says:

Now there is a sad story if I ever heard one.!!
