Marx 60mm Tonto

017

I was photographing this Marx 60mm Tonto with a damaged feather when I realized where the sculptor got his inspiration for the pose. He got it from the Dell Comics  and the daily comic strip.  In the comics Tonto had a  feather. On the television show Tonto played Jay Silverheels did not wear a feather. The 54mm version of Tonto was done base on the Jay Silverheels version.

Two OTSNs ago, I purchased the 60mm Tonto you’ve got pictured —- from John Stengle Sr., for $20.00, which I thought was about an average price, although I remember John Sr. insisting that it was a “great” price.

He had the 54mm Tonto as well, but I thought that without the feather sticking up, the figure looked incomplete, as though the feather was missing. So I still haven’t acquired the 54mm version yet. Maybe at this year’s OTSN.

You can go to Kent Sprecher’s site and see the smaller Tonto. People are use to larger tonto and make that assumption.

Don, I have an extra 54mm Tonto or two. want one?

    • Don Perkins says:

      Hi Mike:

Thanks for the offer —- however, I like to actually see and hold the Marx character figures before buying them, so I don’t wish to get it by mail. But if you’ll have it at OTSN I will make it a point to come to your room for it.

I got “picky” like this after getting a Prince Valiant character figure on ebay which turned out to have a flattened nose, which wasn’t apparent from the photo.

Thank you for the offer, and my plan is to be in your room Friday morning, September 25.

Maybe the prince used to box? That will tend to flatten your nose.

Hi, guys. Re Tonto, with and without a feather — I kinda always thought the 60mm figure looked more better (?) without it.
Not to be picky (or start a squabble) but isn’t the smaller Tonto a 50mm figure?

Don, Ed and I should be in our usual room, 5336. I’ll bring a couple of Tonto’s for you you look at.

    • Don Perkins says:

Thank you, Mike. At some point on Friday, I usually encounter the room you and Ed occupy, but I’m putting a note of Room #5336 in my ever-present schedule book.
