Entertaining article to read. I was wondering if Rick Keller (a resident of Indiana, but now, in retirement, wintering in Florida) would be at the show. I see he gets himself quoted at the very end of the article — something about this hobby being “an incurable disease”. Hopefully Rick will be back in Indiana on April 12 for the Indy Toy Soldier Show. He usually doesn’t miss OTSN or Indy, and most of the time, is at Joe Saine’s Michigan Show as well.
From 1993-1999 I lived in Kendall(south florida).I just to go to these show all time with my older brother;first they were done more close to forth Lauderdale, then move up north. The first two show I went were pretty much metal/lead figures table with few plastic, included “Stone castle import” as main plastic dealer, the last two shows were more diverse in plastic. Not much original plastic Marx else figures but good some rare European figures because of one dealer from Spain and other seller from Poland. I will say any from 10-15% was plastic tables. I think Kent and Heritage soldiers both set tables there least one time.!!? too. Always crowd as space was more limited. The place lights and rooms were very neat and clean. I always find something but not like northern mid states shows I have been at all!!.Still interesting.
I know St. Augustine is not in South Florida but if any of you guys are down that way please check out the M1861 10 inch seacoast mortar next to the VFW Hall in St. Augustine. It is one of only two that still exist and the only one still mounted on it’s original carriage. I want to build a scale model of it but need measurements taken from it.
Oops, that’s the American Legion Hall, sorry.
To view pictures of the mortar look at Waymarking.com where it is mistakenly listed as the American Legion ‘Cannon’.
I did the show for 4 years but never made much money. The people in the club running the show are super nice, but it is just a bad location and the crows small. I did not do the show this year, but plastic was sold by; Mike Handly, Dave Pittman and Ricky Lipps from Ohio, Rick Keller from Indiana/Florida, Craig Remington from FL and the Stengles (Marxman). Craig Remington brought a bunch of loose stuff and sold well as his prices were right.
Dave Pitman and myself have been going down to Palm Beach County for about 5 years now to set up at this nice show. Along with Rick Keller and Ricky Lipp we have been bringing plastic to the previous land-of-metal-men. I got Kent to come over one time as well. For our fellow retirees from the North, it is a good time and excuse to go south of the snow line for a week. Rod Chapman who runs the Columbus, Ohio show joined us last year as well, and sold more than the 4 of us. Craig Remington always brings cool stuff from his warehouse up in Stuart. As more guys retire and move South, I think this show will build in its plastic dealings.
