There can never be too much Davy Crockett, especially the Fess Parker version, and especially the parts about fighting Indians on the frontier, and then on to fighting Santa Anna at the Alamo. I’m glad Walt Disney found the perfect actor — Fess Parker — to play the role. And I’m glad Louis Marx had the foresight to use the story to make one of his greatest playsets.
Just writing the above inspires me to pull out my Marx tin litho Alamo and set it up along with the few hundred Marx Mexicans and Texicans which I’ve been able to acquire over the years. Finally I got, after what I had at age 5, enough figures to set up the Alamo properly in all its glory. I was thrilled when I got my first Alamo playset back then, but quickly realized 30 Mexicans were just not enough for a proper attack.
Great news, Paul! I hope they show “The Scarecrow” I loved that movie when I was a kid but haven’t seen it since I was about eight or nine and it isn’t available on DVD. I wonder/hope it holds up.
Don, I get you on having enough troops. I never got the Alamo set when I was a kid, missed out on it timewise and by the time SEARS came out with the Heritage series I was supposed to be too old. I have managed to get the figures though. For the past eight or so years been working off and on on my own Alamo. I posted some pix back in 07 on another site. Now I’m doing a remodeling of the mission for a painted version. I have over five hundred Mexicans painted and about 200 Texicans for various shots. I hope to have enough figures for a decent layout in a year or two.
I’m getting in the mood to acquire a few more Marx Alamo Mexicans at Indy in 5 months —- probably the shiney light blue Heritage variety. I can’t afford too many of the original dark metallic blue anymore, much less the original flat creme colors.
Don, Don, Don,
We got just what you need a complete Heritage Alamo. I can save it just for you. I’m sure we can reasonably price it just for you. Guess what else, I’ll be at Indy, your lucky day. Even better I should have a number of 54mm conversions too. Just laid in a supply of 200+ Barzso figures including some individual character figures, should have some left by Indy. Last but not least, I have just acquired a number of 60mm Indians in various colors, should have well over 100 for your viewing pleasure or anyone viewing pleasure for that matter.
Ed, thanks for the update and all the info. I know I’ll be in your room early on. Remember, though, after I pay a few hundred dollars in transportation and lodging costs at the Marriott, I have to carefully compare prices from all the dealers and look for the bargains. Having said that, your prices and those of your roommate (all of a sudden I can’t remember his name, even though I always like talking to him and have gotton things from him on the internet) are always reasonable. The variety of your selection is always quite good. Also, I want to see John Stengel, Sr. Try not to keep him out at the night spots too late, like you did in San Antonio a couple of years ago. Remember, he’s not as young as he used to be.
I’ve gotton a few things (toy soldiers) from the internet, lately. My conclusion: As fun as it is getting a package of toy soldiers in the mail, it still can’t compare with the excitement of actually being at a show.
My partner is Mike Kutnick AKA *bookie on E-bay. Yes, nothing quite beats the thrill of holding that little figure in our clammy little hands as we go for the wallet.
Just remember though we also have to endure all the same costs to get there and sell those items, granted we divide that by two.
He’s not any younger and neither am I, hard to believe that was like 7 years ago, seems like only yesterday, years seem to go by faster the older we get. Unfortunately, that sameprinciple doesn’t apply to winter, winters seem to last forever.
My intent is also to divide my Mariott lodging costs by 2, just as soon as I persuade Bill Skinner that he has to go to Indy this year. He usually does, at least he has for the past 4 – 5 years. Last year, however (which I happened to miss) he was slightly put out by what he regarded as his subpar sales. But he’s usually a trooper when it comes to any show he can reasonably get to. He boasts he was at the very first OTSN when it was held at a different location, and has never missed one since.
My job now is to go ahead and make the reservations for the hotel room and table, and then call him early in 2015 with everything all set up. All he will have to do is drive down from west Michigan (whereas I drive down from east Michigan), and show up with what he wants to sell, plus his half of the room and table cost. Then we’ll both be happy.
Ed B
Time flies and you are right we do not get any younger.
I had a good show at Indy last year, one of the best Indy shows I have had. I’ve had better, but it was a good one. The year before was one of my worst, but i think that was because the threat of the blizzard scared everyone off.
