Yes, again, the sculpting of these new Austin Miniature figures look very good —- actually comparable to Conte’s Omaha Beach Playset U.S. Army figures, which really were about the best ever produced, as a result of Conte’s use of multicast parts which could then be assembled into a true full-bodied figure with accoutrements that were attached realistically as well. Conte’s choice of plastic material was always excellent, as was the material used by Austin Miniatures in their Old West figures.

It’s really too bad that Conte has gone into such an extended hiatus from toy soldier production. Despite his occasional surfacing with a few words that he’s going to resume new production, he really has been inactive so long that it’s well past the point where “I’m just taking a little break for personal reasons” has any credibility whatsoever. The words “coming soon” on the Conte website are just laughable.

And it’s all too bad, because Richard Conte made such an incredible contribution to plastic playset production, and I liked him personally as an individual, despite what seemed like a propensity to get into arguments and fights with other members of the hobby. I wish him well, but will be truly surprised to see any new contributions from his company.

  2. They WILL be MINE!
    3 sets Please!

What is the colour going to be when these go on sale?

  4. Ed Borris says:

I saw them at Indy, they were very nice and they did remind me a lot of the Conte Bloody Omaha figures. I couldn’t tell what colors they were cast in as they were all painted. I guess I should have turned one over huh? The looked good though and unlike the Marx marines, they were fighting poses.

Yes, the Marx Marines seemed to be a little short on actual fighting/shooting poses. But the Marx Marine laying on his stomach on the beach looking straight ahead, as well as the crouching (squatting on both feet) Marine rifleman were both welcome additions to WWII Pacific Island scenarios — they looked good, especially in that nice, flat tan color. I would be quite happy, however, if the new Austin Miniature Marines were released in the same light tan as Conte’s Omaha Beach figures.

Ed’s post reminded me to recheck the Indy 2014 website again to see if photos from the 2014 show had yet been posted. They still haven’t yet. I like how Rusty Kearn does it at OTSN — he posts daily pictures throughout all 4 days of show activity — Thursday through Sunday — right as the show is happening. With Indy, Barry Knight never seems to be in any hurry to get photos up.
