Conte Collectibles Romans Update Warhansa spear
I received several photos from Richard Conte of Conte Collectibles. The photos show the three different colors he is doing; gold, silver, and red. Here we see the three colors of the Roman with spear and shield. As you can see the silver and the gold show the detail better.

Conte Collectibles Romans Update Sword up advancing
Here we have the Roman advancing with a sword up. He managed to get a shade of gold which still is metallic but not so dark as to obscure the details.

The Hing Fat look like Russians?
I once saw a link to a new range of Hing fat ‘cavemen’ that were actually hominids with relatively advanced stone aged weapons. They’d be good for fantasy wargames and could even be used as goblins. Have you seen them?

    • admin says:

No, problem companies show items and never produce them. Blue Box was supposed to do a pirate ship for Target and it did not happen.

    • ERWIN SELL says:

James, yes. They are Russian ww2 sets sold first under DGN. I carry sold distribute the sets few years back -2014.
      sets posses as follow approx.
      French WWII 14 poses
      Japs WWII 14 poses
      Italian WWII 12 poses
Russian/Soviets -sold in green as Chinese too WWII -11 poses
      German ww2infantry 15 poses

      https://www.stadsstuff.com/?p=2827
The sets were spotted and post in 2013-14 first here by Greg Liska .

Sold under series Army guys by DGN first in clear long plastic tubes .
Later Hing Fat distribute most sets since 2017 then and there another distributor call RED CAT I think from Russia too also selling them .

The later sets included among others the modern US Nato soldier and nice Chinese nationalist 1936-1942 depicting 10th army south .part of it fought in Burma with British and Americans. The uniform was early 1934 supplied British and by 1943 start to be replaced by US uniforms ,those set come much later not under DGN and HARD TO find here in US
Many first early 8 sets are sold here still from the toy soldier depot company as well and some old DGN brand distributed stock still off amazon or eBay sellers

They-DGN also later distribute and sold the ARW and ACW sets first
      https://www.stadsstuff.com/?p=5750.

Also sold here are The ARW and ACW large set poses but last modern /ww2 are not distributed here but from Russia and few others so far only since few years back already .
I do not recall seen the “Hing fat ‘cavemen that were actually hominids with relatively “advanced stone aged weapons”
I had seen and got the monk- ninjas and cavemen large plastic container sold at Walmart few years back sold under Hing Fat later ; that obviously ended selling any they can from others but not under such description .Also companies such SUNNY DAYS ENTERTAINMENT, LLC sale distribute the Hing fat and former other brands set sold too .
In 2014 I went to NYC toy fare and spot among the Blue Box pirates’ sets that was sold soon after other set of fantasy made by Blue Box that was never sold by them .Unfortunately Target who carry sold the pirates’ sets discontinue the agreement with BB and stop carrying the brand .

  3. peter ev says:

    Warhansa Friends of Robin Hood
Nice figures – unfortunately they made the same mistake as the Barszo Robin Hood character figures. At this period 11 – 13th Centuries monks were clean shaven by order. Beards were seen as an affectation and a form of pride and vanity

    • ERWIN SELL says:

I’M sorry but I disagree in above statement .
Regarding the figure -I believe the character suppose to be an outlaw monk or a friar (Depending on the folk legend tale ) in the forest with robin friends x long ,not quite a monk from an abbey or following strict Monastery rules or order rules ..So the beard is more likely appropriated because of his normal routine outlaw living in forest as most Robin bands .He will not need to shave it by order or else.
If were a friar, beard were permitted and used by most Friar – Brothers orders of the time, but there were not friars in England in the XII century or specially during Richard I era where the main Robin Hood legend is presented in films and some legends tales written .And where the classical toy figures made are base from in general.
Base in some legend of Robin Hood where the monk is presented he was a former monk of Fountains Abbey in others version from St Mary’s Abbey in York, who was expelled from his order . Eventually he become part of Robin’s band. He had strong taste x wine and was very rebellious.
In others he was a friar or brother.
So in simple words ,he is not an order rule follower .

I believe most toy maker use the representation in figures of friar/monk Tuck base in the Figure of Friar Tuck, Scott Monument, at Edinburgh.

Regarding the beard been enforced shave was a very late XII stablished partially in few orders first that gain forced tradition among monks ,friars-Brothers order much later .
Most funders of the earliest friars-brothers and Monk orders all had beard till their death so many of the followers as well according to era portraits , data representation ,description and statues that can be found easy .This is because most follow the early tradition of A hermit, or eremite lives .
Tonsure- the practice of cutting or shaving some or part of the hair on the scalp as a sign of religious devotion or humility is the main tradition used by most religious orders .Monastery monk and cloisters where the main initiator of shaving beards but most likely from late mediaeval eras and after .

Examples of Friar orders were funder and many after used beards
      Franciscans-by Francis of Assisi.
Trinitarian order-by Saint John of Matha
Order of Friars Minor Capuchin-by Crispino da Viterbo

      Some Monastically orders examples
Benedictines by Benedict of Nursia and Benedict of Aniane
      Cistercians-by Bernard of Clairvaux.

The custom of clerical shaving was less universal than some writers in the Western Church implied, although reformers in the eleventh century sought to enforce some canonical decrees on this and other matters, as was evident in Pope Gregory VII’s order that the shaving of beards was a distinctive mark of the clerical order in society. Many clerics, however, still let their beards grow in times of fast and did not shave when travelling. Canonical rules were thus widely disregarded.
There was no single standard with regard to shaving in religious communities. Whereas the monks at St Augustine’s, Canterbury, between 1090 and 1120s are depicted as beardless, those at Mont-St-Michel in the second half of the twelfth century are shown with beards. Hermits, anchorites, recluses and ascetics commonly did not shave at all.
      my thoughts

      • john cross says:

So did the fictitious Friar Tuck have a beard or not?

        • ERWIN SELL says:

Some tales describe him with it while others made no description of it at all.
More likely the image used in most book wrote many centuries after the supposed legend time paint him in many ways.
The main appearance of Friar Tuck as part of Robin Gang was by late XV century or centuries after the supposed Robin and his legend happened
So because most toy makers do him with beard I guess Warhansa just follow up.

  4. Gary DiBello says:

Yes…but since he was fictitious, it was a fake beard. It fooled everyone… except Maid Marion.

  5. BRIAN says:

Richard Greene’s Friar Tuck was clean shaven so that’s good enuff for me!!LOL.

    • ERWIN SELL says:

      I bet he did..
specially if could get a Gillette razor weekly off the dept store at Sherwood forest …
Like most of the gang that shaved too x the TV series .LOL

  6. ERWIN SELL says:

Conte Romans looks awesome.Silver will be likely the best color x me .Bronze or dark gold also may be good too.

  7. Gary DiBello says:

Funny observations! Too bad Gillette did not sponsor Richard Greene show, haha.
But it WOULD be great to have more female figures for the era…
Not just sexy wenches ( but knock yerself out manufacturers–recent Viet-Nam “femme-fatales” sold out PDQ…)
Many of us collect civilian figures. ( Preiser figures are jus too cold/impassive fore some reason). Loved the Barzo camping figs. It’s not all battle action…
But many women who aided the American Revolution…women who supported the Union/Confederacy… French Vivandiere/ Cantinere… the new makers of of “the Great War” are including Russian women… lots of possibilities… and now with 3-D printing, just about any figure/scenario/ historical grouping can be realized…
( Maybe one day the 3-D tech will print pre-colored figs ALA the Timpo sets…hmm..?

    • admin says:

Gary, I agree that we need more regular female figures. Speira is doing some nice ones.

      • ERWIN SELL says:

Indeed Speria already have several and made cam followers least 3 poses ,they will do more according to new owner and maker.
3D is the future of this hobby as is best suitable x limited run figures x such variety market .It will developed more economical as time pass .
        my thought

  8. James says:

I don’t think that will worry too many people as not everyone will use the figures as specifically a Robin Hood band but as generic archers with the monks used for anything up to the 19th century. And Robin Hood is almost certainly fictitious, or a least 95% so (just like King Arthur) so worrying about which century monks had beards is a bit redundant.

    • admin says:

James, I agree with you. It can get carried away on details. I remembered reading on the movie “Glory” they tried to get it correct as possible, but it reached a point where it got nitpicking. The producers were chided for having the wrong shade of green on a hat and the wrong train whistle.

    • ERWIN SELL says:

That what I though too ,historic details or accuracy had not much space on fiction charters figures ..The monk or friar has plenty use ,others too serve as any in mid to late medieval period .
      Good point .

  9. AJ says:

I think it still holds true that the old Marx 54mm Johnny Ringo is the most expensive figure in the collectors’ market. The figure is modeled after the late actor Don Durant, who played the lawman character in a flopped TV series, and has little to do with any actual historical outlaw named Johnny Ringo. Same with the second most expensive set of Gunsmoke character figures. Plus, the semi expensive Marx Hugh O’Brien Wyatt Earp figure is conspicuously lacking the real Wyatt’s big handlebar moustache!!!! (It just dawned on me to make a clay conversion moustache for mine!!!) Personally, I’d rather be happy than right!!

    • ERWIN SELL says:

Maybe the best way to figure it out is to sale off ebay one at high price and then set other x bid to see how far would it go in US collectors world .Now wiliness at moment of listing time and affordability of collector at specific moment may play a fact too .At show there some who just go straight and pay while some times they will skip and pass or others will negotiate and see if the person selling it go for lower .
Auctions are set x collectors for the reason to see how much can be sold in item often ,yet some times can be sold lower than expected prices because those willing pay top are not able or else .It very tricky situation .

Now Europe collectors is another world with many other figures .Spaniards will pay insane price for R&M, Bruber , Mairza ,Lafredo or Gama early rubber swoppet figures .In UK there should be others I bet as well rest Europe.
      my thoughts ..
      best

  10. James says:

Authenticity is ideal in a lot of circumstances but these are toy soldiers and they can be multi-purposed so what is ‘wrong’ in one use is right in another.

  11. Wayne W says:

As long as we don’t have a Robin Hood set with Higgins-style landing craft I can give it a pass. By the same token, if the figures are good…

  12. james nixon says:

The Warhansa figure of Robin Hood with two swords is in fact Nasir from the series Robin of Sherwood shown hear in the UK in the 198o’s.
