Odds Ends Warhansa Aztec Road to Stalingrad
A friend of mine got a partial TSSD Road to Stalingrad. He needs to know how many Russians and Germans went with the set. Also, I would like to know what it sold for originally and what it is worth. Can anyone help?
Don Pielin
Chicago Toy Soldier show
We found out today that Don Pielin has passed away. Don was the creator and promoter of the Old Toy Soldier Newsletter Show now the Chicago Toy Soldier show This show came to be the unofficial national show where makers would showcase their new releases. Another unique thing about OTSN is room trading. You could wander around going room from the room looking for treasures. Other shows have picked up this concept. Don will be missed.
I think that the Barzso/TSSD Road to Berlin set had 96 figures. I will check when I get back home. I think most of the Germans were White/Gray color and some of the Russians were Reddish Brown. I has 4 foam buildings, 2 snow hills and a bunch of accessories. It is a very nice set. I am glad that I got it last year. I don’t know what it is going for these days. I think I paid $250 for it.
Sorry to hear about Don. I met him a few times. Really friendly guy.
The Aztecs look nice.
That’s one I regret missing out on.
You can check the new Playset Magazine book and all of your questions will be answered.
Don Pielin was a one of a kind gentleman in the toy collector world! He helped my brother and I start our MARX Warriors of the World collection back in the early 1980s. We still have those original 400 figures and they remain in our collection in his memory! Don you will be missed. Tim and Kevin, The Connelly Brothers
Very sorry to hear of Don’s passing. He was a true classy guy. Always took time to listen (and remain calm) when Dave and I would complain about that Horrible Hotel! And we had a lot of complaints…….room not ready, wrong type of room, Turkish Air Force in our room etc. etc. Every year for about 5 years in a row there was something wrong, and Don took it all in stride and worked to get it fixed. Always would come around to each room during room-trade to see how we were doing and to meet all his dealers. Very friendly guy. He will be missed.

we had problems with that hotel too. The final straw was when the hotel put a cigar-smoking person in a nonsmoking room next to us. (We have to a non-smoking room as Laurie is very sensitive to smoke and lung damage.) Since I don’t need to sell like you, we go to another hotel and commuted. We have not been there in a while due to cost.
Sad news about Don Pielin. I like the Aztec figures alot and will consider buying them even though i’m sure they will be a bit pricey, Does anyone know the scale of these figures as some are a bit on the big size for me, Are they 54mm or a chunky 60mm?
I got a TSSD/Barzso Road to Stalingrad playset for £125.00 the only thing missing was the nebelwerther German rocket launcher. Will keep a lookout for it either on EBAY or at the toy soldier shows it was all in perfect condition and boxed
Barzso Playsets The Official Authorized Guide presented by Playset Magazine at $39.95 Soft Cover and $59.95 hardcover covers The Road To Stalingrad (and every other Barzso Playset ever produced) in four full color pages with a full MIB contents list. I have probably saved the price of the book by learning what to buy and what NOT to buy concerning Barzso items on eBay. PLUS, it’s a great history of the company and contains hundreds of great photos and a lot of interesting trivia. If you plan on collecting anything Barzso, the book is essential in navigating the CAVEAT EMPTOR “wonderland” of eBay!!
Thank you everyone for your help. My friend appreciates it.
On the Facebook page “Barzso Playsets Fans” there is an album devoted to the “Road to Stalingrad” playset accessories. No buildings are shown. There is also a Figure Guide among the albums for the figures that came with it.
OMG .. had the pleasure of meeting him on his show in 1996 .. what a nice polite man he was! I’m more than sad …

Don was a really lovely guy. Very accessible, very kind, and a wonderful shepherd for the world’s biggest toy soldier show, which his geniality and imposing organizational skills helped birth. It won’t seem the same without him at the Chicago show.
