I ran into Bob Muelro at show and asked him how Peter Fritz was doing? Bob said that he Peter is the same and Bob hopes to check on him next month.

Can you refresh our memories on what “the same” is? I heard a comment at Indy that he was having health problems, somewhat on the serious side, and might not be able to appear at any public toy soldier events, even if he so desired. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Fritz. I got the impression he basically was a driving force in the revitalization of Marx playsets and other plastic soldiers, but he seemed to have faded from his leading role in the hobby just prior to my own involvment. I’ve read and heard many colorful stories about him, however.

Sorry for not being more specific on Peter’s health. The reports you heard about Peter’s health at the Indy Show are true, it is serious and not good. I do not know what is wrong with Peter, but he will not be able to attend any toy soldier events.
Peter was part of the hobby’s early years. Peter was the person you went to for playsets. Peter came up with the idea of auctions that were popular in Toy Shop. There are many colorful stories about Peter and I got in the middle of some of them directly or as observer. I had Peter come up to me at show drunk as a skunk. He tells me if I have a Marx Untouchable Playset, it is his as he had a Beverly Hills doctor who will pay his price. I looked at him with a look no way. I never sold him an Untouchable playset. A trick Peter would do was he would go out with a bunch of people at show for a meal. Peter would order a expensive meal, while other people would ordered lower price meals. when it came time to pay the bill Peter would say lets average it out instead of breaking down to each person’s cost. That way Peter’s meal would cost less. The one time Laurie and I were at OTSN, we ate in a group which included Peter Fritz. I told Larie to eat good as I knew he was going to pull that stunt, which he did. Yes Peter is an interesting person.
I must add that there is no shortage of characters in this hobby. Most are pretty good guys though. Haven’t seen any fist fights yet though or even any loud arguements.

I would say Peter Fritz was the most colorful character I have met in the hobby. His personna and his knowledge were interesting to say the lease. He let his drinking and other foibles get the better of him and he flamed out.
I spent a night drinking with Bill Murphy and JR Edmonds at the Roughriders bar in San Antonio. Those are two pretty colorful characters, especially when you consider that JR Edmondson among other things is a John Wayne re-enactor and that night he was dressed as John Wayne. There was a Teddy Roosevelt re-enactor there too, and he joined us for a while.
