Conte Collectibles Barbarian Prototype Figures

Conte Collectibles Barbarian Prototype Figures, we have gotten permission from Richard Conte to share some of his prototypes of his plastic Barbarians. These figures are to be the enemies of the Romans he is producing. As I mention these are prototypes. They will not go into production unless the Romans are a success.

The first Conte Collectibles Barbarian is standing with ax and sword shot with an arrow. I can see him in various situations

Here is one of two views of this figure
Barbarian charging with sword
I like this pose it so beautiful. Laurie thinks it so animated even in the facial expression. She feels can almost hear him screaming
Barbadian with sword and ax
In this pose, we have another Barbarian running two axes. The detail of these figures is amazing.

four different poses
Here are four different poses. On the left, we have a barbarian running with ax overhead. To his right is a barbarian standing with a spear and round shield. He is getting ready to throw his spear. The third figure is running with a sword and shield. The final figure is firing an arrow upward.
Woman fighter with sword and shield
This is an example of one of the women who entered into the fray along with their men. I see her being placed in the various sceness.

Our final figure is a Barbarian with an ax in his left hand and sword in the other hand. He has a second sword on his back in the hilt.

These figures will be welcome additions to anyone’s ancient army. As I have mentioned before these figures production will depend on the sales of the Conte Collectibles Romans. At this time we do not have any price or release date for the Romans.

These look amazing, hope to see them in production: fantastic!

  2. Peter Evans says:

I think that they have more in common with Marvel Comics than the histories of Tacitus

  3. ERWIN F SELL says:

I like the anatomical poses and cild weather clothing depicted so often neglected in toy soldiers and barbarians.
I can see then used as Germanic,Dacians ,others.
They have use as fantastic warriors too and even Vikings.
    Awesome figures.

  4. Len Hardt says:

Personally, I would love to see these produced FIRST, before the Romans. I love these figures.

    • Craig Scribner says:

I totally agree, Len. I feel that Conte’s Barbarians are more animated and detailed–comparable to Plastic Platoon figures–and have a far wider appeal and applications to collectors than his Romans (although the Romans are great too!). I just think that far more of the Barbarians would be purchased than the Romans, especially as an initial offering, and I want Conte’s return to be successful. It’s great to see more figures from Richard as I have been a long-time fan and customer since I met him at OTSN back in 2000.

  5. Bruno says:

These figures should be issued as a companion set to the Romans.
They actually look much better than the Roman figures do.

  6. james nixon says:

Would love to have a lot of these Barbarians they look great hope they do come out.

  7. Rich Fisher says:

I agree with Len & Craig I think the Barbarians would sell better than the Romans especially since other makers are doing Romans. These Barbarians look fantastic & would go great with the Russian made Vikings & Conan figures. So far I have purchased none of the NEW Romans being made but would make multiple purchases of the Barbarians especially if they were packaged so that you could purchase entire sets of the figures.

    • admin says:

Right now the Romans are at the factory and will be done first. Too much preparation and money have gone into the Romans to push the Barbarians ahead.

      • Craig W. Scribner says:

Understood, Paul! I’m sure we’ll all support Richard and purchase his excellent Roman figures. Let’s welcome him back in a big way! We’ve missed you, Richard! Thanks for all you’ve done for our hobby and we look forward to more of the same!

  8. Wayne W says:

Well, here’s hoping the Romans are successful – I definitely would like to get my hands on some of those barbarians.

  9. ERWIN F SELL says:

I think Conte give the hobby the best figures ever since start.
The first true film base figures and a new style w more historical figures to out hobby.
Few had done equal or alike figures.
Above figures are well done within historical co test and research.
Base in Roman’s early description of Germanic and other barbarian the clothing, garment ,headwear and weapons are accurate.
Prices are x what quality deserve.
New figures I will guess will be more costly as life cost had increased and production cost as well.
    let’s hope start soon.

Wow these Barbarian figures look awesome and i will get some if the scale is more like the early Conte 54mm Viking and Norman figures which i also have, However if they are larger and more like the 65-70mm Spartans that was produced later i will pass on them as they wont go with my other 54mm figures which would be a shame. So heres hoping?

    • ERWIN F SELL says:

      Darren.
      With respect please.
I do not think the spartan made by CONTE are 65 to 70 mm unless measuring them to top edge of helmet Crest.
Calculating by the tall pose eye/top forehead view measure they are 60/62 mm max
They may look taller as any figure w tall headwear or helmet.
Any knights 54 mm w tall cube helmet horned Crest could be 65 mm then if we measure as that and any napoleonic w tall shako same.
Yet I understand your range scale likes and definitely the new CONTE may well be too tall x your range unless you start increasing your range.
It was CONTE the ones that start the new more accepted today 1/30 range scale figures continued by others such TSSD,LOD,NN,Russian makers and latest CTS sets…among others.

      • Darren Hatley says:

Yeah i respect what you are saying Erwin and i understand. However as ive stated i dont like the new 1/30 trend in figures and i think companys will lose sales from people like me who want the figures slightly smaller and back to the classic 1/32 scale. So as i said these Conte Barbarians look Brilliant and if they are nearer the 1/32 scale i want i will buy some, But if they are more 1/30 i will once again have to pass on them as they wont go with my smaller figures. On the bright side it will save me some cash Lol. However saying all that i hope they sell well and good luck to the collectors who dont mind the larger 1/30 figures if that’s what they are, Enjoy.

  11. Alex Baldwin says:

From what I heard Richard say on Facebook, I believe the Barbarians are going to purposely be slightly larger figures (taller and just a little bigger all around) than the Romans. I believe he is trying to go with historical accounts from the Romans saying that the warriors of the Germanic tribes were tall, big, and rather fierce looking. As such, I’d guess (though I certainly could be wrong) that Richard’s Barbarians/Germanic tribes will be slightly taller than his Saxons/Normans/Vikings. I certainly understand the desire to have some uniformity in size of ones collection but I don’t pay it much mind unless the figures are just way too big (70-75mm figures and the like). I even use the 1/35 scale figures in my setups (like Esci WWII and some of the mars figures which are smaller than 54mm) even though they truthfully are a little too small to be ideal. I imagine these figures will look really good with the figures TSSD produced some years ago but time will tell. I’m so excited about Conte producing plastic figures again that I think I would be interesting in getting them even if they were from a historical period that I don’t normally collect. They just look amazing to me.

    • ERWIN F SELL says:

That will be complete perfect accurate.
Germanic,Scandinavian and slavic people in general were and still are taller than ost Mediterranean celts,Latin ,Greeks and iberian European from were most Roman early manpower of their armies was conscripted.
Once again CONTE show true accuracy and logical perfection.
Even so I love most makers today ;it is impossible see in a line of 10 soldiers all standing exact same high and body build. This disparity had been use by all makers with not care at all of the mistake.
I know is hard to make one set with different high people and other slenders versus other non but least high could be done right.
By instance most Mexican mix race or indians who were 80% of Mexican armies were smaller than most Texans and the makers made them even taller than Texan in many cases not counting the shakos.
If Conte does it w barbarian will.be very logical choice and historical accurate .

  12. Darren Hatley says:

Hi Alex and Erwin that’s a very good point about certain people tribes of countrys are taller than other countrys and i think doing the same scales in Toy Soldiers is a good idea. As long as its done accuratly of course. If your right Alex about these Barbarians being slightly taller at say 57mm than the Brilliant Conte Vikings and Normans that’s fine with me and i would still be interested in them. Ive said all this before but it is very important to me, Almost all my figures of several thousand are between 50mm and 60mm which is fine, But ive noticed over the last few years the trend of making figures 65mm to 70mm which for me is to tall and big and i wont buy figures of this size. So i know i must bore some people to death with my scale comments but every time new figures come out i do need to know there scale because if they are 50mm to 60mm i will buy them, But if they go over 60mm i wont buy them. Just my point of view and preference. Sorry if anyone is thinking oh no not Darren and hes scale views again?

  13. Darren Hatley says:

I missed out the Conte Saxons of course which were also Excellent figures. By the way just what was the scale of the Conte Romans? Does anyone know?

  14. Alex Baldwin says:

The Conte Saxons are excellent. My brother and I have amassed a little over a hundred of them and I would gladly take more if they were reasonably priced. Unfortunately they are some of the more expensive Conte figures. Richard said he was going to do more 1066 era (Vikings/Saxons/Normans) if the Romans and Barbarians sell well. Let’s try to support him where possible as a community. He’s one of the few American producers who is still making new sets and has done much for the hobby.

  15. Alex Baldwin says:

    Ed,
Very true. He has not. I still consider him active because he is trying to produce new sets. Tony from AIP is in the same boat. He has not produced a brand new set of figures since 2014 but I still consider him an active player because he plans to release new sets and is releasing his old sets in new and useful colors (like the Adrian Helmet WWI French which he just issued in Green and Grey). I suppose the point of the comment was just to say we as a toy soldier community need to try to support him if possible in the hopes that he’s able to release more sets. I will be doing the same with the Austin Miniatures sets when they come out.

  16. ed borris says:

Okay, 12 years is a long time between sets. Once he produces something again I’ll concede to him being active and welcome him back. The only one I know that took that much time off and made a succesful comeback was George Foreman.

  17. Mark T. says:

I’m really looking forward to this set! I definitely plan to buy some Romans to help the process along. The barbarian with the winged helmet looks just like Frank Frazetta’s painting of the Sword & Sorcery character, Kane.
