 Deluxe Reading, Giant, Manurba

The Deluxe Reading sets were always treat to see at Christmas. They were sold mostly in grocery stores. One of the most popular one was their space sets. The set had at least eleven different figure poses. It also had two animals a dog and monkey. The monkey is hard to find. I found him in a junk box.

Giant tank

Giant did a wide variety of figures in 1/72 scales. These figures were usually at the check out counter. One series they did is military. According to Kent Sprecher they were out in 1966. The above item is listed as a tank. According there are two types a short barrel and a long barrel.

Deluxe Reading, Giant, Manurba

Manurba made a nice series of western figures. One of the best is this Indian with Winchester across waist. I like this pose and have one in my collection. The only drawback is he at least 65mm which might be out of the range of most collector’s interests.

Starlux Medieval

Starlux did not only do a wide range of knights they also did series of Medieval people for the court. It is a great series with a jester and a priest with cross. One of my favorites is the noble with a falcon. I picked a couple of this pose up at the Plastic Warrior Show last year. (Remember the 2019 version of the show is May 11.) I am not sure if he has been repainted. Still a nice addition to your medieval scene.

Joe Falce Conversion

As everyone knows I like conversions. Years ago I got various conversions from Joe Falce of Western Pennsylvania. This is one of them. Joe took a reissue Marx 54MM pioneer and changed the head. What do you think?

i like the conversion.Looks very well easy done and good match .
Any 65/70 mm have plenty space in my collection w many exact match european range.Even here in US with many brands contrary to the myth. They did indeed plenty in that scale range scale. Aurburn,IDEAL,TIM MEE ,BETON ,AJAX to mention few did most their production in the 65-75 mm scale range easy .So that plus most european are perfect match .
Even Marx try and did some sets in that range or actually taller ,the WW2 japanese marines ,cowboys and indians in the 3″ scale sets are good examples and available reissues from mexico today
Those strictly dedicated to old traditional 54 mm of course can not blend with then.
Ironically enough ,many new maker today are closer to the 65/70 mm than else .LOD and TSSD ancient are very tall,so are EXF ,no name brand from Russia,Supreme chinese made and others
    my thoughts.

My brother and I got the Reading Cape Canaveral Set for Christmas 62. I didn’t realize it wasn’t Marx until I was an adult.

I love the head swap, makes a great rebel sharpshooter, which is probably the point?

As to scale, I had some Auburn GIs and thought they were great- as well as the Andy Gard Civil War guys, but usually I stayed with 54mm guys. The only reason I’ve bought some 60mm guys lately is because with scale creep (as Erwin refers to) they fit in with some of my newer figures. But I have my hands full with the two scales I collect so I have to admire those beautiful figures from afar.
