Marx Toys Figure One we have not looked at Marx in awhile. So I have pulled some figures from the collection. We started off with the Marx Ranch hand. Next we will look at two odd color variations. finally check with
Marx Toys Figure One Ranch Hand
Marx did the ranch kids to go into their Roy Rogers playset. The mold according to Eric Johns had 14 cavities for each figure. Only a couple of the figures were place into each playset. One of the figures is an adult which is labeled as ranch hand by collectors. the problem on acquiring the original ranch kids is the cost. Twenty eight years ago a large supply of reissue figures came in from Mexico. The ranch hand is one of the reissue. The reissues are even hard to find these days.

The pharmacist figure from the skyscraper playset on the left is a test figure that was done around when the molds were sold. The pharmacist is normally in cream.
I remember the red GI figures being sold as prototypes on ebay – crazy prices.
I thought this was a real interesting post–thanks, Stad. Currently on eBay there is a set of 32 Marx GIs in “day glo red” for $900.
Yes that is a crazy price.
I’m wondering what will do the buyer when spend so much in odd color soldier set that can not be use.
sometimes I see this color matters a ridiculous thing.
And then we criticized the prices in timpo and other figures .
my thoughts.
Many European collector are surprised and some lought at how much we value figures x just the shade color made unpainted.
There must not painted figures are devaluates.
I understand nostalgia and good match.
But I have to agree w TD.
These are plastic.
900 x 32 bright red gi’s is too much in my view.
Rare or not .
That if sale create false inflation prices that only affect the hobby.
Nothing to be with unique or rare.
my thoughts
Plastic is a very inexpensive material. Just because it’s colored pink and shaped like a toy soldier is no reason to get excited. There, I said it.
I should have photographed the blister-carded set of ranch kids I got twenty years ago before I broke them up on ebay last year. It wasnt a full set but cool nonetheless.
The military band figures were also sold in white hard plastic as a “you paint them” toy. In Holland they were made in white hard plastic and factory painted with red coats as the USMC band.
As I grow older I wish I’d desired more “civilian” poses. They come in handy for my needs as non-combatants in some of my projects. Oh well…
I agree with Biff, an interesting post. I like to watch auctions like the one mentioned just to see if anyone bites. I am often surprised (but not too much) to see someone often does. I’ve been watching the Barzso Pirate Schooner that has been up there for $700 for some time now – if someone buys that I would be seriously tempted to put mine up for a bargain $500… (just joking, I know the demand would be greatly decreased).
I really like that ranch hand. He has a great cowboy hat. If he had a gun on his hip and was in a decent color and had boots instead of cuffed pants, he could become my favorite western figure ever. Looks like he is getting ready for a quick-draw showdown.
