Plastic Figure Showcase Part Five More Mark MacNamara we are back with more from Mark on his project. This time we will be looking at his six inch figure project. Then we will follow up with some more interesting figures.
Plastic Figure Showcase Part Five More Mark MacNamara Mark
In the last post I mention that Mark had done his new Captain Gallant figure in six inch and 60mm. Mark explain a little more on his project. The version you see here is the paint scheme / prototype figure. The figure was 3d printed by Shapeways in a sandstone finish. Mark did not like sandstone finish, but the better finish was too expensive to sell on ebay. He did not think the Sandstone finish is good enough to try to sell.
Mark is working on making some silicon molds to cast in resin himself other figures.
Plastic Figure Showcase Part Five More Mark MacNamara Detlef
As I was working on this post I got a message from Detlef. He had some new figures to share. He got these bushmen from a collector friend in South Australia. The friend told him that they are to get in the tourist shops. The figures are inexpensive. The figures are nicely painted, well modeled and about 50mm. Detlef said the remind him something of the great Fontanni from Italy.
Plastic Figure Showcase Part Five More Mark MacNamara Odds Ends
When Americana acquired access to the first molds done by BMC they soon realized they were limited in what they coud offer. So they did variations. One was doing the Civil War figures in green. This was done to represent the Irish Brigade. They also did a new figure, which I believe it is one of the chaplains. Hopeful someone can fill us in on this figure.
I normally do not 45mm figures, but I like these knights were done from China.
Yes that is a Chaplain or a priest that was included in the Irish Brigade set. I think there is also a figure of Brigadier General Meagher on a horse too.
The figure is Fr. William Corby, C.S.C. He was a Catholic priest who served as a chaplain to the predominantly Catholic Irish Brigade. The pose is taken from when he was granting absolution to the troops before they headed into the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. There is a statue of Fr. Corby on the battlefield, and a copy in front of the residence hall that bears his name at the University of Notre Dame.

After the civil war Fr. Corby became president at Notre Dame. The veterans of the 63rd New York presented him with the Irish Brigade’s banner to be displayed and kept safely at the University. It was not an actual battle flag but the silk banner made by Tiffany’s of New York that had been used to recruit the troops during the war. After many years and wear and tear the banner was falling apart. By chance my family of multiple ND graduates decided to pay for the banner’s restoration. After about a year in a specialty business in Sharpsburg, MD the banner was returned like new to Notre Dame. It is occasionally brought out and displayed on home football weekends.

Thanks Erwin !
I started with Marx 6 inch recast Men from Uncle figure / figures that look quite a lot like FFL figures. I don’t remember if I used 1 or 2 . I had it 3d scanned , pretty expensive ( plan on trying to cast my own figures from silicon molds ) I then had it 3d printed ,I also had some smaller figures 3d printed by Shapeways , I don’t like the finish on the 6 inch ,it is like sandstone . the smaller figures came out beautiful ! I have some coming in the mail, I think will fit the Marx original FFL figures better. Thanks for asking !
Sound great!!!.
Looking forward see results and new figures.
It may be pricy now but the 3D is main future tool x short run production and best source of continue making new figures.
In next few years they will become more cheaper.
Silicone type molds are best shot for now of course s and if meticulous as you can get great figures resulted.
Good luck and keep it x the hobby.

Thanks Again !

I have about 40 of these knights and they look really good and are in nice poses, Although they are about 45mm the top half of them are just like any other 1/32 figures with only the legs being shorter than they should be. I have found this with many other brands of figures where the top half is 1/32 scale and annoyingly they think it best to put small legs on them making them 40mm to 45mm. I have converted many hundreds of figures to make them taller mostly working out very well but for now i have left these knights alone as they still look good as they are.
Mark’s Captain Gallant figure is an excellent sculpt, well conceived. It fits perfectly with Cuffy, also standing & saluting, as well as the Marx Cpt. Gallant Legionnaire pose doing a rifle salute.
But even standing alone, I think its a very good representation and visual image of Captain Gallant.
Hey Mark,
You can get a good deal on casting resin at Michael’s if you use a 50% off coupon. It’s by the Alumilite Corp. of Kalamazoo, it turns white upon curing. The box says it cures in 10 minutes. I have some I’m going to try in some silicone rubber molds I have.
Thanks ! I’m already on that !
yes, the figure is that of Father William Corby, chaplain in one of the regiments of the famed Irish Brigade. the pose copies the one of his statue at Gettysburg, and is depicted in the paining “Absolution Under Fire”. Fr. Corby gave absolution to the troops of the Irish Brigade, on the front lines under fire, right before they charged.
