Odds Ends November 2018 Part Two Reader’s Contributions Thanksgiving we start off with some readers sharing some photos. I will relate our modest Thanksgiving plans.
Odds Ends November 2018 Part Two Reader’s Contributions Thanksgiving Photos
First we have a photo from Floyd Wilson. Floyd was one of the people who bought the special figure of Ron Barzso. As you remember Ed Borris did the figure as a tribute to Ron and what he has done for the hobby. Floyd put it with he Marx Richard Greene Robin Hood character figures for comparsion.
Second we have a box set of Britains Herald Trojans from Benjamin Saidal. The Trojans in the box are Hong Kong version. There are nine figures in four poses . Only pose missing is the mounted general. Benjamin asked me a price on the box as he is planning on selling it on Ebay. I said a minimum of $50.00 because of the condition of the box and number of figures. It could as high as $100.00. I as surprised to find not many Britains Herald Trojans for sale on Ebay.
The figure on the left cause some interest with French collectors. As you can see the figure is a female pirate. Our French wonder who made it and who was the scupltor. Erwin Sell was able to give them some information. The figure is believe to been done by Simonetti. Simonetti did work for Fontanni and Cane. Using reference of two Italian blogs and a book on Italian figures Erwin found the figur may have done another pirate set for someone else. The set has a total of four poses. The pirate figures were sold loose or with candy. The figures were sold by various companies into the 90’s.
The other pose to the right of the female pirate is similar to the Cane pirate with the monkey. Difference is it has a hook on his right arm.
We thank Andrey from Russia for use of his photo.
Odds Ends November 2018 Part Two Reader’s Contributions Thanksgiving Our Thanksgiving Plans
Laurie and I do not make a big production out of the holiday. We do not have any close relatives so it is just the two of us. Our normal plan is to go out to eat. We have been doing that for years. We will go as last year to Old Country Buffet. They have a nice selection and are reasonable priced. In the past we have tried other places but have had bad experiences.
So from Laurie, Sparky, Percy, Quinn and myself we wish happy thanksgiving. Oh the guys will get a special meal that day as well.
Odds Ends November 2018 Part Two Reader’s Contributions Thanksgiving Rerun Time
Since we are talking about Simonetti I thought I run again a photo of figures from year and a half ago. These two figures were acquired by Peter Evans for me at the 2016 PW show. I feel from the color of the uniforms and the Italian flag they were done for Garibaldi’s red shirts. Peter thought for the American Civil War. We could both be right.
Thanks to Floyd Wilson for the photo integrating the Borris/Kutnick/Barzso Robin Hood figure into the Marx Richard Green Robin Hood figures. It looks like a very good match, showing it would also go very well with the other set (non-Richard Green) Marx 60mm Robin Hood personality figures.
I like the two pirate figures, and seeing the Herald Greeks & Trojans in a box is something you don’t see very often. Of course, I myself gave up some time ago paying too big a premium for having the original box, especially when the box is somewhat raggedy/junky. I realize this goes against the conventional wisdom; it just isn’t that important to me personally.
On the red-shirt figures, I think Admin is undoubtedly correct: they must be Garibaldi Red Shirts, especially since one of them seems to be waving a flag with what appear to be Italian colors. I guess they could be used as American Civil War Zouaves, if you removed the flag. And of course, the uniforms of American Civil War Zouaves were modeled after certain French regiments, rather than Italian. French Zouave regiments fought along side Foreign Legion units in early Algerian/Morroccan wars, which is one reason why Tony’s Armies In Plastic (AIP) Civil War Zouaves can be used so well fighting his Arab sets, side by side with his Foreign Legion sets, even though I suspect the Foreign Legion uniforms don’t line up perfectly time-wise.
Finally, to you, Laurie, and all three of the dogs — have a happy Thanksgiving. My wife and I have eaten at Old Country Buffet many times (including once at Schaumberg during the Toy Soldier Show), and I like the variety of selections (turkey, chicken, ham, roast beef, steak, etc.) where you can have portions of several different offerings all in one meal. If you’re not committed to having Thanksgiving Dinner at home with extended family relations, I think a nice Thanksgiving Buffet is perfect.
Put my first figure I made based on converted Marx figures then I had downsized,it is Captain Gallant. Figure is between a 54mm and 60mm figure, I plan to have a figure a little larger to go with the original Marx Captain Gallant Figures and also a 6 inch version I’m working on now . Here is a Link if interested —https://www.ebay.com/itm/302967090184
The saluting Gallant figure looks good though the photos are dark & fuzzy. Is this a conversion or an original sculpture of yours? What is the material it is made of ? Can you take some better photos of it and have Stad post them here?
Yes , Photos leave a lot to be desired. The Figure is actually nicely detailed. I converted some 6 inch Man from Uncle figures and then had it 3d printed down in a hard like plastic similar to Marx WOW and Goldmarx . I’ll try to get some photos taken tomorrow and ready to Post.
Simonetti large figures originally are Confederates. Flag have a star. I guess what 12 poses was produced (6 for Union and 6 for Confederate), but I saw just 11. Available in blue, grey and flesh colors.
Happy Thanksgiving to All ! Love the Pirates ( I think the Guy with the hook might be a Cliff Sanderson copy ) and Garibaldi’s. I’ll have to Google image Simonetti
The so call Garibald/ACW Set were original intended as US cavalry to match the alike set indian made to battle then ,these figures generally were sold unpainted and pretty much abundant .I have full set both.12 poses each .made in grey and blue as typical generic ACW makers does .
The original are with wording ITALY and again were sold under ITALY brand mark that is a line in connection with ISAS when either copying or using others molds .This brand stop making figures in mid 70s as was sue by NARDI when copied some of it sets poses and the sets or overstock of these figures pass to other cheap sellers /distributor who still sold then around till well early 90s
The color i had seen are light brown-khaki ,grey and blue while indians in light brown ,dark brown and pale yellow and in bags ,but found loose often
CO-MA is the one that did a rare set for Garibaldi and are very hard to find .
Yet i agree the uniform depicted had a more strong connection -similarity to italian Garibaldi army than the US army 1956-1868.It ihas strong differences not quite seen in typical US army of the civil war or indian wars .The artist -possible by Simonetti or other artist using alike technique definitely was influenced by Italian revolution era uniforms. I have both set and can provide pictures.Aso these figures were showed by admin in photos of last PW show he wet too.

Nice job Erwin !
Glad the Ron Barzso figure goes well with the Robin Hood set; I figured it would – I figured that’s where I’d use him.
I don’t know if the figures came painted originally or not, but the flag alone tells me they’re geared for Italy sometime; however, without the flag they really could be used for ACW Zouaves or with a little work or imagination Zouaves from any army that had them. Great shots – thanks for sharing.
The garibaldi red shirts army ,original call the 1000 army did indeed used a zouave style uniform copied from original Zouave French army style, the scarf bandana was introduce by Garibaldi as he used in his service in Paraguay army wars were he adpted it.the star in middle banner was used by Garibaldi units and reused during WW2 by two italian units as well ,also by militia batallion from 1943 till 1946 call garbaldi batallion .
Definitely the soldiers uniforms are more pro Italian as I mentioned.
The reason to use then x Indian set most had been x profit as back then they know it will be sale better as indians, cowboys and soldiers from US were more popular.
They were sold so far in colors to match US army for Indian or civil war.
I do not know or seen in red but could had been.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL HERE AND THEIR FAMILY FRIENDS!!!
Same to You Erwin and Everyone else !
