Odds Ends Part Two BMC News Cane Civil War Cane Figures.
Cane of Italy did many figures. Many of the figures were copies of other figures. Cane did new figures as well. One was 54mm Civil War or cavalry figures. Here we have the officer. My favorite pose of the series is soldier in kepi hat with pistol. Another pose has a soldier with a Winchester which would be in accurate for Civil War.
Here is a salesperson’s sample of the Cane Napoleonic figures. I got this when I visited the Nuremberg Toy Fair. I had wanted to do this show for years. So I did it before I got married. This is amazing show with the number of buildings they had for toys. Grisoni was selling the figures at the show. I do not know if they had acquired the molds or were leasing them. I did not get any of their product at the time. Later Peter Bergner purchase from them which I purchased from him.

Our very good friend Peter Evans is recovering from knee surgery. He is right now at home resting before he returns to work. He is planing on using that time to work on articles and hopefully do more conversions. We will keep you updated on how he is doing.
Nice if any local stores carry them and what would be the cost ? bmc figures are getting expensive
I doubt they will get it to any chain stores. If they barely carry crude Chinese copies and not even most nice done Chinese figures set that are coming only online or other way. sad but true.
my thoughts.
I always liked the looks of the Payton anti-aircraft guns mounted on a mobile, treaded chassis.
And when I get my big Armed Forces Training Camp display set up sometime this year, four of those Payton vehicles lined up in the motorpool, along with my Timmee deuce & a half trucks, will look good.
At the Midwest Toy Soldier Show last April, I didn’t think I could afford the boxed Marx Armed Forces Training Center Playset George Kroll was offering. The box looked like C-9, and knowing George Kroll it was probably 99 – 100%. I couldn’t even bring myself to ask the price! That’s one of the reasons I prefer dealers at these shows put prices on their wares — so I don’t have to ask.
But for the last couple of years I’ve been acquiring multiples of most of the components, as well as other pieces I think might fit in, both at shows & off the internet (including from Kent Sprecher at Toy Soldier HQ). I’m now approaching enough stuff that I can visualize the outlines of a good, expansive, and organized U.S. Army Camp set-up, combined with the marching Marines & Navy figures.
I plan on looking for a few more things at the Columbus Toy Soldier Show in two weeks, including more of the Marx Marines & Navy marchers —- in a training camp, one can never have too many marchers!
Hi Don. I have some figures if you need them. Send me a message.
I love the artist work of Elio Simonetti
CANE pose above belong to original designed Simonetti US cavalry set that come right after the ACW set CANE did coping in solid form the swappet Britain US civil war set ,posted here from me.http://www.stadsstuff.com/?p=9229
Same way as DULCOP did with it US cavalry .The sets are US cavalry and depict Custer pose in one .then they made in two colors to be used as ACW .This had been done by many European manufacturers as well US brands such Marx 60MM scale Cavalry made in others colors for revel army .
The napoleonic (“CANE”) are hard to find and were from Fontanini work by Simonetti ,direct extracted from Fontanini resin poses .Cane barrely sold then under its brand and it was Grisioni =CGGC who actually sold then packed till 1985.
Italian producer of plastic model vehicles and plastic models Grsioni= “CGGC” (with “GG” standing for “Giocattoli Grisoni”, i.e. “Grisoni Toys”).
This company was active from 1970s till 1985 and was eventually taken over by another Italian company named GPS Cavicchi, which still uses Grisoni’s molds to produce plastic items to this day, some of them still featuring the “CGGC” logo.
Some of the molds, however, were not taken over by GPS Cavicchi, but went to a company in Monaco called Poly-Plastic instead, which re-issued those models with its own “PP” logo and “Made in Monaco” lettering.
Other former Grisoni molds ended up in Brazil with a company called Brasilflex.
Others went to Basa.Peru.

I have not use x that scale unfortunately in armor, the Payton armor vehicle are post WW2 and can barely use by me in Korean war else. They are both (tank and AA tank are clearly base in British centurion crude made chassis ,only used by British and commonwealth armies .The jeep and truck are ugly ,only the cannon has some use if like …The soldiers were 40 mm Americans and ugly done too.
However I often found the vintage Payton cheap all over around in eBay ,garage sale else, many still in bags. So to me it look like not a big deal sale either as you can get pretty much same old vintage in good to great condition for same value or even much less big deal lot often.
Only Payton I kept original is the red cross closed truck version and cannon plus recast copies Payton landing craft .
The Payton scale may be of interested for the train hobby collector as suit one of their main scale range .
Reissues of Marx Russian are all over from CT Marx México mold else.
I remember in my only two trips to North Miami Marx former warehouse getting few dozen bags in dark brown and OD ,i did convert few by cutting and glue many as much i can .Very difficult as Marx Russian is one of the ugly choice poses ever made with so many not quite action poses or firing at all.
One dancing or dying ,other running away or advancing grabbing a PPSH 41 in not human possible way ,other throwing grenade in the typical Marx odd pose ,one clubbing (not quite x WW2) and officer (documentary picture extracted) pose plus one shooting nice pose. The 6″ poses have two new better poses I thing and others a bit revised. Only enough x one set single poses
The MPC set is far better as action poses and uniforms.
No point redoing it again in my view and also so around plus this mix cloned Marx airfix better set.

my opinion/thoughts else only, please.

I’ll repeat my thanks and appreciation to Jeff for his ongoing efforts to “preserve” the figures of BMC and other companies at affordable prices. I think he’s doing an invaluable service in keeping the hobby alive for those who can’t afford the works of art being offered at higher prices as well as providing toy soldiers we can hopefully use for kids to play with. After all, that’s where most of us first fell in love with the little guys.
And it doesn’t hurt being able to pick up a bag or two of the guys you played with as a kid. Takes me back to going to Grant’s, Kresge’s, Ben Franklin, or Woolworth’s and getting a bag of toy soldiers when I was a kid. Thanks again, Jeff
I’d also like to express my appreciation for all that Jeff Imel and VictoryBuy have done for the hobby. By releasing a huge range of Timmee/PP reissues, BMC bagged and boxed sets, and the “Classic Army Man” series, Jeff has made great toy soldiers available at affordable prices. By marketing at Amazon, he has provided an accessible alternative for people looking for something better than the army man dreck at the dollar stores. I value his product both for the nostalgia of reacquiring figures I had as a child – and, because of their robust construction and price point, I can treat them as the toys they originally were.
I purchased all the BMC playsets when they first came out at Toys-R-Us. Like many collectors, I noted that while some figures were quite mediocre (Alamo Defenders, along with D-Day Americans & Germans), others were pretty good (Alamo Mexicans, D-Day British, and Iwo Jima Marines & Japanese). Many of the BMC accessories were also exceptional (D-Day Landing Craft, Indian TeePees, San Juan Hill Spanish Villa, and WWII tanks).
Unfortunately, BMC released all its playsets in cheap, flimsy boxes which only opened at the ends.
But Jeff Imel took both the D-Day and Iwo Jima playsets and created new, much sturdier tray-type, Marx-style boxes which opened up as a front-lid. It made all the difference in the world, & was a 100% improvement. Jeff also beefed up several of the accessory pieces, like the D-Day bombed out building, making it a much more stable, quality piece.
So I’m looking forward to the Payton Anti-Aircraft vehicles, which I think will go perfect with the Marx 45mm Armed Forces Training Set.
I also think Jeff had a good marketing idea in releasing it in a set of four vehicles, thus automatically creating a battery formation for collectors.
I have two boxes of his items sitting on my lving room floor since the show.
I always bought BMC playsets for their accessories and scenery; if the figures were decent that was just icing on the cake for me. Happily there were some decent figures in some of those sets – maybe not always up to Conte, TSSD, or Barzso standards, but for the price. And there were always the scenery and accessories.
It could be just me, but I find that Cane pose to rather effeminate. He looks more like some type of dancer as opposed to a fighting man. Then again I find many of the European made poses to be some what odd. Anyway, that’s what I think for what it’s worth.
These figures were done by Simonetti. He is known for his nativity figures.
The style of Smonetti was followed and repeated as well by many others artist in Italian production.
Atlantic have some poses sets as well Dulcop ,Durplaxtix/Xiloplasto ,too .Even COMA and other smaller makers did alike not quite same style .
I call it animated style and if in some may looks funny looking in others are unique in my personal like.
Every country flavor style art used has his own signature and characteristic that made then peculiar and original.
As I collect realist historical figures with new makers I do too by value and cultural interest w vintage.
Spain and Italy are my main European wanted and looking figures, even so I own a lot of full variation sets; I still miss a lot.
Germans not Elastolin have their peculiar way, so are UK production but more common to get from eBay else and imported here more too.
France style in almost all brands was 2D image resemblance figures poses and their production is huge, but quality of fragile plastic used by most made then difficult find in good condition often, versus Italian and Spaniard much better material used.
HK are many copiers but sometimes did nice mix copies and companies such Blue Box made original many full sets. Russian most vintage are flat and East Germany had a huge nice amount brands sets with mainly western thematic and thousand figures hundreds sets but most in the 70/75 mm scale.
Few other countries production have their own while most are copies of others.
For realistic more logic poses and historic I look in to new makers more often from 90s till now. Old vintage are x collecting pose/purpose interest mainly in my like and collection. Still many found a way in to blend with new makers figures.
New production is made dedicated to grow up collectors looking more x accuracy else.
Old vintage was made back in time x children to play, have fun and else. A complete view for artist and makers back then versus what is made today.
We all have our own personal like and choose what we want, like else. Great diversity that I respect.
Good part there plenty to chose and yet to know and learn.
Admin stadstuff show figures never or barely seen here in States or sold before as well. His list introduces many to wonders of figures none us will ever know exist back then and today with his web site we can see more often.

Yuck, to the Cane figure. Looks like he’s starting his dance routine. I also need to point out, although many US manufacturers did make ACW figures using the same figures and just casting them in blue and grey, this did not happen with Marx 60mm or 54mm. The 60mm Cavalry figures were not cast in grey and not sold to represent Confederate Cavalry. The odd colors out there are from Canada and test shots. The bagged set in tan was not sold as Confederate soldiers.
I agree the Cane figure looks like he should styling hair, not doing whatever it is he is doing. I think it’s just a ridculous looking pose. He looks mor elikee he’s mincing, not fighting.
Cheers to Jeff for keeping the true toys alive. I see conversion possibilities for the ADA vehicles.
