I don’t know; maybe it’s just the idea the war is an ongoing thing? But it seems like a bit of politically correct over-reaction. AIP did Afghan and Iraqi War figures years ago; even as much negative spin as we had on Vietnam Timmee produced their M-16 carrying GIs and other Vietnam related accessories.

Maybe they should just rename the kit to: “Bombed – Out Desert Dwelling” or something like that. The building is generic enough I should think you could use it for almost any desert or Middle Eastern conflict.

I have it! Call it “Bombed-Out Africa Corps HQs at El Alamein” and it should be okay. Of course you would have to rename it, “Bombed-Out Allied HQs in North Africa” to sell it in Germany. You wouldn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings…

  2. Rich Fisher says:

The name is fine by me & I will be purchasing one. Looks like more limiting of FREE SPEECH & ideas. I say congrats to any plastic soldier compant that is producing something new for our scale .

  3. George Albany says:

What the heck is wrong with calling it destroyed house? That’s what it is, right? Maybe we should all go out and buy one. That’s what I did when Revel succumbed to the pressure about the Nazi UFO, bought one and plan to create a vignette with it.

  4. James says:

I was expecting to see a soldier or civilian with guts spilling out.

    But, just a destroyed building?

  5. Don Perkins says:

Rich, I think you are slightly confused:

FREE SPEECH means you have the right to defend whatever you want.

But FREE SPEECH also means that others have the right to criticize the same thing.

Are you trying to prevent what the critics of this model have said, just because you disagree with them? If so, then YOU are the one attempting to limit free speech.

You yourself may enjoy “war toys”, and you have a right to express that view. Others object to the concept, and they should have the same free speech right as you to express their objections.

In other words, the critics of this new Airfix model have the right to:
    1. Criticize the model;
    2. Urge that the model be withdrawn;
    3. Urge consumers to boycott the model.

And that, my friend, is FREE SPEECH.

And it in no way limits you from taking a contrary position.

But if you argue that no one is allowed to criticize what you enjoy, THAT would be a limitation of free speech.

As to the substantive merits of this particular issue, I doubt many people will be opposed to the making of a model of a bombed out building in a war zone. But in no way do I think that my own enjoyment of toy soldiers necessarily trumps every other value.

At one time, only a few “cranks”, “radicals”, and “extremists” in this country objected to slavery. Today, those abolitionist “cranks”, “radicals” and “extremists” are held in high esteem.

These days, the ones who object to toys like this new model typically get reviled by those who pride themselves on their “common sense”. But some day, the persons who objected to the glorification of war via children’s toys may very well be regarded as the ones who saw the issue most clearly.

  6. Mark T. says:

Idiotic PC frenzy. For one thing, this is not likely to be played with by children. It’s intended as a diorama piece or to be used by adult miniature gamers. Kids today don’t play with war toys. They play with superhero toys.

When we were kids, we played with war toys of all kinds and yet, miraculously, unlike today’s kids, we could go to school without any fear whatsoever of being shot by our classmates.

  7. Daniel Murphy says:

This story reminded me of a ruined house that came in some Airfix WW II battle set a few years ago that also contained German infantry, British paras, and some tanks. I went to the Airfix site and it appears that they have a whole line of European buildings in various states of disrepair from WWII military activity. Not having kept up with Airfix, I had no idea. Below is a link to a shattered Polish bank.
I think the problem with the Afghan house is that the war is ongoing and that people are very concerned about civilian casualties from coalition bombing. As Don points out, there can be a range of reasonable opinions on war toys. Public opinion about a conflict is probably very important too. WWII toys seemed to flood the market soon after that conflict, while the Vietnam War helped drive many military toys from the market. Here is the link to the Airfix Polish building: https://www.airfix.com/uk-en/polish-bank-1-72.html

  8. Wayne W says:

The only thing “insensitive” that I can see is that it’s about an ongoing war. I, too, was surprised to discover it was just a damaged building – as Daniel has said there are numerous models of damaged buildings on the market but because they’re not called “Afghan” no one seems to mind.

Sometimes the outrage seems selective. As Don has said, everyone has a right to their opinions and to voice them; my concern is the Chicken Littles often tend to squawk loudest and get their way – as with the Revell Model and FoV Confederate figures.

  9. ERWIN F SELL says:

In my opinion is just a small ball been blow out proportion by few to bring attention.
These are not even toys but models made as replicas for adult and historic accurate scenes representation .No need cry that lough because of it .
How many more toys and else are obvious made for this war and any war now and not outrage!?.
This remind me of ridiculous UFO-NAzi craft no long ago.And of course the anti war vietnam era culture that stop the production /sale of many army related war toys in late 60s and early 70s ,helping to bring considerable the halt of playset army men else toys x children.
My opinion. These are very pathetic sensitive people.
The maker label-title the model by exercising the freedom speech right to say or give his view opinion with the title he/she /they chose for it..
It was apparently retaliated by too way sensitive people not looking at a simple model with (0) politica intention.

    My thoughts …

And is my freedom of speech .
    Just in case.
    Best ..

  10. James says:

Then there are zombie figures holding entrails in or waving someone else’s limbs around.

As a number of people have said destroyed model houses are nothing new and modern US type soldier, either Vietnam type from Timmee or more recent in Fritz helmets, have been around a long time now.

The people who are outraged are unlikely to have had much association with the toy and model industry and will most not likely relate to the artistic and game aspects of the hobby. of course, we have also had the absurdity of suppression of Confederate flags as well.

Yeah, they have a right to do that but always fight back so that they don’t impose their will. At the risk of alienating those who may have agreed with me up to this point, this creeping political correctness is a major factor in why many Americans voted for Trump. I couldn’t resist that one.

  11. Benjamin says:

Enough of the snowflakes. If people are offended by the model, then screw them. They need to get a life.

  12. Mark McNamara says:

I like it ! What is the next to to People who pretend to be offended , ban Confederate toy soldiers, especially flag bearers !

    • James says:

Apparently some chain in the US did that; I can’t remember if it was Walmart or another one.

Also, the German model collectors can’t buy kits with swastikas. Of course it is a particular sore point with Germany’s much cultivated collective guilt but we are talking about representing history rather than history munus inconvenient bits.

      • Mark McNamara says:

Right you are James ! The People doing this are perpetual agitators ( some are even paid to agitate ) If they got every thing they are demanding right now, they would find something else to pretend they are offended at !

  13. ed borris says:

Unfortunately, we live in a time where everyone is looking for a reason to be offended. If they can’t find something to offend them, they are offended and make something up. A building in a state of disrepair is hardly the sickest thing I have seen. I bet they would have a coronary if they saw my figure called “Brain Salad”, that depicts a Mexican having his brains blown out through the top of his hat. Better yet, there are some 1/72nd figures that actually depict figures having sex, that would probably make them cry. We’re going to need a bigger crying room.

    • Benjamin says:

Borris is dead on target. In America the highest calling that Americans aspire to is be a victim. Preferably, a left wing victim. If I was paranoid, I would say that criticism of war toys is yet another assault on men and an attempt to geld them.

  14. james nixon says:

Has the paper got nothing else to put in it they must be hard up for news. It is great advertising for Airfix children don’t play with soldiers anymore seems the people at the paper are a bit behind with the times. If they are interested in that why not do an article on the Blitz in the UK in the second world war and the repayment for all the families that were bombed out and had family members killed by the Germans. Nothing said about they must think that in war you throw bags of flour at each other and know one gets hurt have been watching Bugsy Malone to much.

  15. Don Perkins says:

Before getting hysterical, people should consider the source of this story: The Daily Mail, a London tabloid widely criticized for its unreliability, as well as printing of sensationalistic and inaccurate stories of science and medical research.

It’s akin to Rupert Murdoch’s own tabloids — the London Sun and New York Post — and in fact aims at the same market of gullible, easily outraged, thoughtless, conspiracy-minded know-nothings.

Hence, typical headlines, designed to drive internet & print sales with headlines like “WORLD’S SICKEST TOY!!!”

You can get the same sort of sensationalistic crap from National Examiner and National Enquirer at supermarket check-out aisles, all appealing to the same Archie-Bunker type mentality — i.e., low threshholds of discernment as to what causes them to get upset.

  16. r smith says:

Mayor khan of London no doubt approved this tale,,good thing this gang wasn’t around in the 40s,,

  17. Wayne W says:

I just want you all to know that I am offended by everything you said. I am now going to go into a corner and curl up into a fetal position and die. I WOULD eat worms and die but I wouldn’t want to offend a vegan.

  18. Brian Johnson says:

I would have thought the old Aurora Guillotine would have bragging rights to the World’s Champion,I know I had to hid mine from my Mom which was hard to do cuz you know how Moms have to sweep under the bed!! Actually I had it behind some books in my book case and would bring it out when my buddies were over till one day I left it out and you know who came in to change the bed linen. It was close but I finally talked her out of tossing it but whenever I mentioned the other Aurora Horror kits was a firm NO.
