Roman Painting Basis for Marx Roman Pose in the Comments Mark Mcdermott mention he had found a possible reference for one Marx 60mm Roman poses. He gave a link but TD Barnecutt copied the picture so we can get in into the site.
Roman Painting Basis for Marx Roman Pose The Pose
TD said this”I compared the image in the painting with pictures on-line of the Marx Roman and Mark is totally correct. The figure was modeled after the painting.
I agree with Mark and TD. This is not the first time I have seen possible reference used by Marx. Peter Evans sent me years ago a photo of a book which had a pirate on it. The pirate was a dead ringer for the Marx 60mm pirate with hands on belt. The only problem he was not sure which came first.
It would be interesting if any other references are out there.
When this painting just was done?
The box art for the Giant Blue and Gray was taken directly from the Life magazine series of Civil War Centennial special issues.
The 1961 issues of Life include artwork that was bound with heavy cardboard bindings.
The series depicted scenes from the ACW and Marx used the images on the Giant box.
I have all 6 inserts.
“The Fight at Minowa in Palestine” 1947 by Dean Cornwell.
Thank u Brian.
There is an actual Civil War photo which shows a broken wheel on the ground – it looks just like the Marx broken wheel.
There is also a carved limestone wheel at a cemetery in Ohio which also appears to be copied from the Civil War photo.
I like apreciate Mark and TD for posting this ,it very interesting data and well catch.
WOW!!!
Also I believe many of ELASTOLIN price valiant poses ,later partially direct by Reamsa as well are direct extracted from comics by Hal Foste in 1937-1939.
Best…
There is a really cool Prince Valiant site on the web, lots of good pics and info there for fans.
Here is the site. http://www.princevaliant.org/index.html
You know, I may be thinking of a John Wright cast iron pirate with crossed pistols. That one was definitely stolen from a Wyeth illustration. Sorry, my bad.
Welcome Erwin !
I think the pirate pose you reference was an N.C. Wyeth illustration for an old edition of Treasure Island, not absolutely positive, but I think so.
Peter had another photo that may not be from the N.C. Wyeth
I have a silent Alamo movie on VCR that shows a Mexican mounted lancer that looks just like the Marx Presidia hat mounted figure with lance.
Presidio
The film name is the Martyrs of the alamo or the Birth of Texas-1916.I saw the movie at school as students in a special theater showing silent movies, the film was advertise falsely as been from Griffith but in reality was by less known director Cabanne, the presidio mounted lancers are seen in parade when entering the town and briefly at one action.
