Greg Liska’s Rebel Veteran Ed Borris Showcase Greg Liska
Here is Greg latest conversion. Greg’s has once again has come up with a interesting figure.
I had come into a group of figures that contained some vintage damaged Timmee Pioneers. I had always believed that with a little work, the standing firing guy could make a credible Confederate. This was the time to try it. Another broken toy soldier saved! Then I had some BB gun pocks to fill in and I got rid of the fringe on his trousers. I cut off the chewed remnants of his musket and added a longer bayonetted MPC musket end. Finally I added a cartridge box (from a Timpo WWI Italian) and a bayonet scabbard (end of a cocktail olive spear). Lastly, his powder horn was cut into a rectangle to make it a cap box.
Ed! My God! You CAN’T sell those guys! Such a load in one place! What a dream! If this were the days before I painted and converted, I’d buy the lot. Light blue and tan; Confederate cavalry, metallic blue; Federal.
I like what you did with the Timmee pioneer. The basic figures from that set look a little to stylized for my taste, but with your conversion, he fits right in with Marx.
Are those Conte Alamo guys the resin figures? I have all the soft plastic ones, but the ones in your picture are different. I wish they had done those guys in soft plastic instead of some of the non-period “Alamo Defenders” that were released. (I do like the Rogers’ Rangers in the Alamo sets, though.)
Yeah , those are the Conte resin Alamo defenders, they were bonuses when you bought the sets. They are rather fragile. A good number of them were pirates refitted for the Alamo. Seems to be a very popular tactic used often by Conte and Barzso for that matter. Take some green stuff add it to an existing master and boom, you have a new figure. Nothing wrong with that. For example if you look at Chinghascook, the same basic sculpt was used as a Texas Ranger and a Royal Marine that was never released. I’m pretty sure Marx did it too, if you look at the later addition 54mm cavalry pose running with saber and the Boonesboro pioneer running with musket, other than the clothes and the weapon they are virtually identical in the pose. It’s amazing the things you notice when you cut up figures for conversions.
At least a couple of the Marx Vikings are virtually the same as Boonesboro pioneers as well, just with different weapons and clothes. This also shows up in some Airfix sets, especially the earlier 1/72 series where the poses are practically standardized for all sets.
Thanks, Mark. I really like this guy. I might do the kneeling firing pistol guy up as a dismounted cavalryman if I get hold of a damaged one.
I like Greg conversion ,i see many other uses as well for it .
looks like Ed may have some early profit at Chicago soon.
I like the PUG alamo pose,i can use as revolutionary war too or as Mel Gibson(The patriot ) .
Teddy Roosebelt looks nonhistorical without his tall (M1889: Brown (Tan) Leggings-boots) and not quite that hat as his was flat wings as most regulars and the typical he used in pictures later was not his field uniform at Santiago Cuba campaign actions ,neither he wore so sloppy uniforms .(The three quarter sleeve shirts is non typical in hot action because mosquitoes and harsh bushes environment to keep sleeve full down at all time was priority to avoid infection at all cost) Same goes for tunic .Both Spanish and American can be seen in pictures with then down/full extended at all time during action and after ,also on photos of death in field .
He did not use his saber in that battle .He left it in horse at all time.Neither he used his reading corded glasses at battle but rider-horsemen military provided glasses with back strap support .They typically tied neckerchiefs around their necks as wrapping around rather than loose to avoid Mosquitoes in their necks at all time as well.
Several pictures taken during and at battle can bee seen at NYC museum and his home museum as well books .Nothing to be with the figure at all.
The image may had been base in film or books wrong depiction I guess.
Yet I like PUG sculpting .Too bad not mass produced. There some medieval figures they do great too.
my thoughts.
best
Who says he was in Cuba? He could be drilling in Texas or where ever.
Anyway he does have leggings. they just blend in well.
There are also plenty of historical pictures of him at the Menger Hotel in the Roughrider bar and other locations scattered through out the hotel.
Then is missing the beer ….
An orderly is carrying it for him. Can’t be lugging around a kegger when training.
lol
Slight correction , I’m not selling the Plastic Undergound guys or the Conte resin, just the cavalry all three colors. I will also have over 100 60mm Indians, 100 or so conversions and lots of other goodies.
Oh , if anyone is going to OTSN and wants to stop in and say hey, I will be in room 5203 next door to TSSD. I will have beer and for a quarter I’ll let you punch Mike Kutnick. Or, you could buy some raffle tickets for Shop with a Cop and possibly win a signed playset box, it’s signed by Kirk Douglas. It’s a Spartacus box by Ron Lizorty and there is a picture of it on page 29 of Playset Magazine. Beer, punch Mike Kutnick and buy a raffle ticket to win an autographed box, how can you pass that up?
A quarter for punching Mike? The price has gone up.
He’s getting older and even more feeble if that is even possible. So, just in case it’s fatal it’s more or less a donation for the body bag. Yes, I know this sounds cruel, but those of you that know Mike will understand.
