Marx Pirate Ship Prototype
Les Lessa has sent through T D Barnecut photos of the pirate ship that was suppose to go in the proposed Marx Treasure Cove Playset.
In this photo Les Lessa took the top off to show the hull. The pirate ship is not in scale to the 54mm pirate figures
The pirate ship bow
The pirate stern. The pirate ship is hard plastic.
We have more photos from Les Lessa via T D Barnecut T D said this I have a few more photos from Les which show some of his pirates aboard the “King’s Ransom”, a radio controlled ship produced by Aqua Craft. If you google “King’s Ransom” by Aqua Craft there are lots of pictures on-line of the ship and also a PDF file of the assembly and operating manual. The ship is about 1/35 scale and came with 4 pirate poses. Some of the pirates shown here are the white soft plastic 54mm Marx pirates Les has collected.
Les also has Replicants and Barzso’s pirates as well.
Very Nice, thanks for the photos Les and TD !
NIice detail, but definitely way undersacle ,almost HO scale as far I can figure out from pictures with out figures next to it.
Wonder with MPC and IDEAL
larger ships why would Marx do so small ship
Looks like it would be for no bigger than 30mm figures. It IS cool looking. OK, I gotta say this: The scale thing is what prompted me to torture myself and make those big ships. It was a pain of the first order, but I’m glad I got them now. Yeah, yeah…..I tooted my own horn. Sorry.
There was a game by Milton Bradley called Broadside I think was the name, the second later edition about the same time as Axis and Allies. It came with two 30mm probably pirate ships and the figures in my game were downsized versions of the Timmee pirate with the sword at his side. The ship above reminded me of the Milton Bradley ships. Barzso did make a couple decent ships for this era one was intended as a pirate ship, the other I believe was going to be a pirate hunter British ship. At least he had the prototypes for the Royal Marines.
Ed.Are figures from that game blue and yellow in hard plastic?
You got the wrong game, Ed. Broadside was a game about War of 1812 naval battles and there were only 2 inch ships with detachable sails and shore guns in the game. No figures.
I know a lot of people settle for Playmobil ships, but they are too large for me. If you can find any older ships made by Simba, they are perfect.
And if look well from above view it has the same shape as those MPC hollow ships.
If would be 30 mm scale wich I doubt by size of cannon ,it would be x the HO Marx scale use in most small range playset that was not quite HO.
I understand MARX reduce the armor and wagons to around 45 mm scale together w the 54mm figures to give as much x less.
But if this miniuature woul be released with the 54mm pirates I bet many children would be disappointed.
And not doubt in good design and detail please. But not logic x it size in my opinion when IDEAL and MPC are more close accordingly with their figures.
My thoughts..
Erwin,
I don’t remember the colors, they were two distinct different colors though. I think they actually changed the figures in later editions. I still have the game somewhere, one day I’ll have to find it and look. If I remember correctly there were also two captain figures, don’t remember exactly, it’s been 25 – 30 years since I took the game out of it’s box.
The game Broadside on Ebay:

That’s the first edition, I have that one too. That one is from late 50 early 60’s. The newer version came out in the 70’s.
The first editions were:
Broadsides
Dog Fight
American Heritage
Hit the Beach
Later editions:
Broadsides
Axis and Allies
Fortress America
Shogun
Some Roman game I don’t remember the name of , something Empires I think.
Here’s the one I’m talking about:

I like the look of this game! 1984 Broadsides
The Roman game was Conquest the Empire.
The 2 games are not different editions of the same thing. That’s Broadsides (plural) and is a completely different theme. Broadside was not from the 50’s it was released for the Bicentennial, which is when I got it.
The one that was Rev War was not American Heritage, it was Skirmish. I had them all but Hit the Beach. There was a Civil War one, too. I probably played that one most, but I’m not sure of the name. It might have been as mundane as Blue and Grey. I’ll look it up.
It was called Battle Cry. Here it is:

I had the first Broadsides late 50’s early 60’s the one you gave the link to on E-bay. I used to play it all the time with my buddy who lived on my block and he moved out in 1962. I didn’t say they were the same game just had similar names made by Milton Bradley in their two series of War Games. The later series of war games started in the late 70’s, maybe sometime in the 80’s. I know I had the later war games when I lived in Chicago and I moved out of Chicago in 1986. They may have re-released the originals as I see two different boxes for the same games on E-Bay.
Here 1962.

Ed –
Ok, then it’s not a ‘later edition’, just similar names of 2 unrelated games. I had Axis and Allies, too. Got it about 1978, I think. The Heritage games then were a re-release for the Bicentennial. I remember getting them in 1976.
I was actually referring to the later editions of their War Game series. None of the games in the two series were alike. The later versions were much more fun to play.
I think I still have them all except for the Roman one Conquest of the Empires.
It’s like Stratego, there were many editions of the same game, the one I have actually has wooden pieces, just like there are many editions of Risk, one of my buddies has one with wooden pieces, mine had little plastic rectangles. The pieces of both games have changed through out the years. The game strategy or rules didn’t change.
Ok thank you Ed, actually the one ship in game you referring is very alike Marx in size/style art carving ,al do an early XVII century nicer design ship. Wile the supposed Marx prototype looks smaller and late XVIII century small Brigantine .
Very good observation recall memory by bringing that up. The figure showed is not ones I got .
I have a set of odd plastic pirates in 30 mm scale, there nice poses but not clue who made them ,still I think because odd size are from a game as well.
I will see if I can supply pictures later and squeeze between so many works here for admin.
Great way both you Greg and Ed to use eBay x reference. I had found eBay easy way to find and research x years even thought in past I was hardly criticize by some one x doing so.
I think if items are almost complete and showed with cases could be use as good reference ,specially if pictures show trademark, brand and years.
Yes I bought that ship K R by Ac when first come and paid top$$. Now is more cheap, I agree the ship is about 1.35 wile cannons are 1.32 ,the boats I think were actually smaller than 1.35 .Nice realistic toy, better than most play Mobil . The black pearl last edition from pirate of Caribbean is awesome too.
I have the two early SIMBA ,will get picture x ,both come with 8 poses rare pirates painted figures in 54 mm scale. The ship were from 90’s then gone after few years, not all store carry, I saw it at few stores and hobby/school supply stores too.
Same as nice large 8 different Simba castles
I found a Simba ship MIB on ebay, and did an obo. To my surprise the offer was accepted in seconds, so maybe I could have gotten it a bit lower. Nothing was said about any pirates, and the photos of the contents didn’t show any pirates. Maybe this is for the ship only.
Anyway, it looks similar to Playmobil in a photo of an assembled ship. I will compare to my Playmobil, when it comes. Based on the the Simba items you have photographed and the advertisement photo, it should be quite a nice ship, and a great addition to my small fleet.
This will be my first complete large size ship as the others I got were incomplete used Playmobil or Zizzle Black Pearl.
Les ,
How big is exactly that ship in length and w?
Could you provide a picture next to figure please ?
Just out curiosity to see how it will looks in playset.
thanks
Now, THAT’S a nice toy ship. I bet it costs a lot. I’ll look it up. Tempted to add this to the fleet.
Greg.Yest it come out first in 2012.It still cost a lot.
You may be lucky finding one not functional x low price
The non control remore black pearl playset bring another large nicer too and come around same year.
Erwin,
Those figures shown are not the ones I got either, mine was a small version of the Timmee pirate, I believe most figures were the same except for the captain, don’t remember what he looks like. Someday I’ll have to search it out and refresh my memory.
Jim McGough had the Marx Treasure Cove playset pirate ship on ebay about a year ago. Don’t recall what it went for. There are some of the Marx treasure cove pirates in the picture too. The flattened playset box art for Marx’s Treasure Cove playset is on display at the Marx toy museum. I’d love it if Phil Rosner (Sp?) would make it as one of his playset boxes. I love the Pirates of the Caribbean Black Pearl pirate ship by Zizzle.
“King’s Ransom” by Aqua Craft is a great looking ship and so close to scale. I want to see if I can find more information and prices for this ship.
I also like the look of the Marx Prototype, but it is so much smaller. I has nice details.
Thanks for sharing these photos!
